tried to come back....but this board sucks....
Well, I tried....I gave FT a couple months to get over their technical problems with the light bulbs, folder colours, etc. resulting from their new format and upgrade.
The board is still slow and has a lot of technical problems. It is hard to put up with during a busy day.
I use the most up-to-date browser with all patches....it is the board for sure.
I must admit, I miss all the posts and personalities....but don't have time to put up with poor implementation (and all the real estate missing at the top of the screen).
Best regards,
Dorian

Dorian, I agree that this board is slow at times (I connect via both a frame relay modem and a cable modem), but no matter how slow things occassionally get, this board is the only one that is WORTH IT!!!
The personalities - CATMAN, DOC, BECKLES, PREMEX, ESSEXJAY, etc make this board a necessary stop - several times a day.
I need several things to start my day - coffee and Flyertalk rank real high on the list.

Dorian,
We would all hate to see you go. Here is the link I use and all light bulbs and folder colors work. I have not noticed slow performance either at work (T1) or home (56k modem). I use IE 5.0 both places with PentiumII computers. Try this link.

Sure, the technical problems are a little annoying at times, but that's far, far, overshadowed (or is it overshadowed) by the people and the information.
And, by the way, isn't the title of this thread a little... uncharitable?

Okay, I admit my title is a bit harsh...but I meant technically it sucks...not the content nor the people. I had a headache when I posted it....
Sorry...

I do understand Dorian's frustrations though. At home/office I have cable access and I use the ultimate access link. When I am travelling and using Maple Leaf lounge computers, I have the same slow loading that others complain about using IE or Netscape.
I remembered the "ultimate" url when I was in Ottawa this week and it did really speed things up. I didn't check to see of the "normal" url worked just as slowly though.
It is definitely worth it to try that. Maybe that will give Michael an idea as to why the pages are loading so slowly the other route?
We want to keep the Dorians of the FF world on the board so it would be good to trace this and get it fixed.

Ouch. I'm sorry to hear that you are disappointed in our efforts, Dorian...I do understand and would like say that no apology is necesary.
I received some news yesterday from UBB confirming that there does indeed appear to be Y2K related problems with some of Netscapes cookie technology.
UBB also tells me that they have addressed this issue in another upgrade which I will be implementing ASAP...hopefully this will resolve most, if not all, of the cookie related issues.
As for the speed issues we are upgrading the RAM on our Solaris based server and that should significantly impact performance in the positive direction.
Those are our biggest concerns at the moment and if we can get them under some semblance of control I believe we'll be a bit closer to what you expect from us.
I'd like to thank you all for what you had to say in our defence and I'd like to thank everyone, including you Dorian
, for your continued support and patience. There really are no hard feelings and we do hear and understand your feedback.

I'm also concerned about the site's access speed (waited two minutes for the reply window and I have a cable modem). I'll try the speed link above, but would appreciate any improvements in this area.

I bookmarked and am using the link http://talk.flyertalk.com/forumcgi/Ultimate.cgi
This is great because it doesn't have the annoying frame on the top. I'm having no troubles with speed, but I'm using a cable modem.

Hello everyone and thank you for your feedback.
I just wanted to let you know that we appreciate your patience and that we are still continueing to work on the cookie & speed issues of FlyerTalk.
I spent many hours yesterday and during the last week attempting to get the UBB upgrade in place. The one that UBB assured me would fix these cookie problems. I hadn't anticipated any problems as the upgrades have never been much of a problem in the past...but alas, this one is giving me a bit of problem for some reason. I managed to get some of it in place, as you can see, but not the critical pieces which was my real goal.
I need to contact UBB again and look over their technical support forums and see if I can determine why this should be a problem. In the meantime keep hanging in there and we'll get this resolved asap.
