How do I automatically subscribe to threads?

Hi - maybe I'm missing something obvious, but I've tried searching the forums, reading the FAQ and hunting through my CP - is there any way to set an auto-subscribe to any thread I've posted in?

Thanks for any help and sorry if it's right in front of my face :-)

I believe any thread you post to is automatically subscribed.

As well, there is an option at the top of each thread that says "thread tools" which has a "subscribe to this thread" choice.

Thanks for replying Mary - I am definitely not being auto-subscribed, and I keep forgetting to tick the "subscribe to this thread" =/ It would be much easier if there was just an auto-subscribe option!

Looking at your account, it appears your settings are set to autosubscribe with no email notification (you can change your settings in MyFlyerTalk > Edit Options).

Are the subscriptions failing to appear in your MyFlyerTalk subscriptions list?

There is!

It's available under your My Options control panel (found under the Quick Links menu on the top-of-the-page navigation bar). Here's the direct link:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/profi...do=editoptions

Under the Messaging & Notification section, look for the option labeled:

Default Thread Subscription Mode
When you post a new thread, or reply to a topic, you can choose to automatically add that thread to your list of subscribed threads, with the option to receive email notification of new replies to that thread.
Your five choices are:
  • Do not subscribe
  • No email notification
  • Instant email notification
  • Daily email notification
  • Weekly email notification

I believe the default is the second option. Therefore, you may actually be subscribing to threads but not believe you are because of confusion on how the process works. Here is an outline of each option:

Do not subscribe:
Provides you with absolutely no notification or tracking of threads you have posted in

No email notification:
Does not subscribe you to email notifications, but it does mark any thread you have posted in as "subscribed." You can then access this list of subscribed threads with new activity on your MyFlyerTalk page (also accessible from the top-of-the-page nav bar, though I just go directly to that page from my bookmarks [or from memory! ] when beginning each FlyerTalk session), and from there, you can go directly to the first unread post by clicking the small downward-pointing arrow immediately to the left of the bolded title of the thread. Note: this is my preferred setting, since it is much cleaner and easier to navigate than dealing with email notifications.

Instant email notification, Daily email notification, and Weekly email notification:
Subscribes you to email notifications of new activity in threads you post in. The emails are delivered instantly, daily (usually around midnight Pacific Time, where the FlyerTalk servers are located), or weekly (I forget which day of the week), depending on the setting. In addition, you are subscribed to the threads on your MyFlyerTalk page as described above, in the event you want to track activity with that option.

You can also manually subscribe to any thread following the directions given by Mary2e above. You can even create different subfolders of thread subscriptions--I have three: Subscriptions (the default), Bookmarked Threads (used for information I may wish to reference later, such as lists of good restaurants or promo codes), and Threads To Read Later (for when I don't have time to fully digest that 30-page thread).

I actually didn't find out about the MyFlyerTalk page until an FTer told me in person about it in 2007. Prior to that, I relied on email notification of new activity. Since discovering the MyFlyerTalk option, my utilization of FT has become MUCH more efficient (just open all the new threads in tabs, rather than switching back and forth between my mail program and my web browser), especially given the increased posting activity I have these days. (The only downside to this method is that if you take too long to read threads you've opened into new tabs or if you step away from the computer for a bit, FlyerTalk will think you've gone away, and next time you open a forum or refresh your MyFlyerTalk page, all of your "unread threads" will show as read, making it much more difficult to find out where you were. I've posted about this issue in this thread. However, I still vastly prefer using MyFlyerTalk to email notifications--I already get enough emails every day!)

Hope this helps!
