At the end of the day, a judgement call by me based on my actual experience over the past several years of seeing up front the contentious issues that politics and religion has at times. In fact, it is highly likely that no other single member has seen these contentious items as close as i have and that is something that might be considered by anyone reading in. I think most of us are aware that an outside view and more often, even a ringside view is not nearly the same as the view from the center.
It's as if you had a housekeeper who stayed out of sight while accomplishing her work. As far as you can see the house never needs cleaning. It's always spotless, so the job must be far too easy. You decide to ask her to add mowing the lawn and pulling the weeds to her duties for the same pay. She fires you on the spot.

I have found just the opposite. The discussions in OMNI P/R are, almost always, either respectful or funny, whereas I've stopped following threads I've started in UA and AA because of the incredibly nasty responses I've gotten.
As for OMNI P/R being a lion's den, only if you have an opinion with nothing to back it up -- those people tend to get eaten alive. Those with facts and grounds supporting their opinions make for interesting discussion.

Joking.
I do think that splitting the forums was very helpful. It helped us regain the kind-of goofy, off-the-wall spirit of OMNI that I came to like. With so many political threads, especially this past US election season, issues which were not political were shifted off the front page within half an hour in peak times. The split keeps the "OMNI" feel of both forums but allows members to keep their interests specialised and after all, that's what FT is all about, right?
(I do support hiding OMNI to google searches and returning post counts, but that's neither here nor there.)

I only get nasty when the right-wingers defame me. Since truth is a defense to libel, I can't get nasty with you.
Fortunately, most of the OMNIcons are very nice, intelligent people with whom I enjoy discussing a variety of topics. It's easy to identify the others -- they've start a thread today so that they could all pull each other's . . . um . . . fingers.
I do as well. The usual shenanigans aren't an issue, and I certainly write with the assumption that the universe will be able to read it. The problem is one someone publishes defamatory material, as has happened to others (and to me, yesterday). There are not a lot of options at that point.
I would also like to see a minimum post threshold for participation in OMNI. There's far too much inappropriate behavior by newbies whose only interest in FT seems to be rude OMNI posts and the like.

But, what you said. Or is it "+1"?
