Perhaps the one year requirement is so that you can establish a bad reputation for yourself, just as I have. (As I'm sure ScottC will point out.)

Regarding the one-year requirement referenced above (where is this, by the way?), is your FlyerTalk "age" tolled by timeouts? What about lifetime bans?

Cactuspete, please see:

http://www.flyertalk.com/townhall/talkmoderator.shtml

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Qualifications and Skills:
Ideally, a TalkModerator would:

* Be familiar with the common FlyerTalk forum functions (such as posting a message, editing a post, registering, and using the Technical Help and FAQ links).
* Possess a broad interest in frequent traveler programs.
* Demonstrate a friendly and helpful nature.
* Have a high comfort level with FlyerTalk, the topics and the personalities of members.
* Be fluent in English (since that's the common language here).
* Be located outside of the USA (Australia, New Zealand or Japan would be ideal for around-the-clock coverage. Even Europe or Hawaii would give us an extra six hours or so of coverage).
* Be a longstanding member of FlyerTalk (greater than 1 year).
* Be familiar with, and a supporter of, the current moderation criteria.
* Have the flexibility to check into FlyerTalk frequently. Moderation typically only takes a few minutes, but it's good to be able to check three or four times during the day to see what's being asked and said.
* Be a traveler of some experience and knowledge.
* Be willing to work for minimal miles/points while taking abuse from users .</font>

I feel comfortable with a moderator who
1.has not previously engaged in flaming wars
2.someone who has a calming effect on threads.
3.doesnt go for the juglar when challenged.
just my australian pesos worth.

Hey ... you guys would be delighted to post in THIS FORUM then:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum13/HTML/000502.html

The most civil, well mannered, most closely moderated Forum in all of FlyerTalk right now.

No flame wars, no personal abuse, no substance abuse. Not much of anything really, but it is QUIET!

Heck no Scott .. you missed the most important line:

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">

We will be introducing additional volunteers as moderators over the next few weeks as time allows.</font>
I mean if Delta suddenly needs THREE moderators, the busy and vibrant Ansett Forum must need at least ONE vigilant set of eyes?

And that hot-bed of off-topic threads AIR CANADA must surely be crying for the services of Few Miles and/or others?

And hey ... you and I still appear to be appointed as the temportary, trainee, unpaid moderators of THIS thread still.

As noted, I'm still reviewing applications and when i have come ot a point where a candiate application may not work for a particular reason, i'll let that person know. My time has been sucked up by the launch of the Freddie Award balloting earlier this week. As noted, more volunteers are on their way.

As a note because I think it was a question. One's proficiency with a program is not a pre-qualification for being a moderator. Moderators aren't asked to be experts on a topic - that's the value of FT, many members contribute to that expertise. moderators are a foem of welcoming committee to the many new members who arrive daily. Their goals are fairly clear, try to help members direct topics to correct forums and serve to remind when necessary, that staying on topic is very cool on FT.

I think there was a question about UA needing three moderators. Someone might have asked before assuming anything. Craig has served that forum well over the years and recently has had more office work piled up on him. I want to give him less responsibility so he can feel free to contribute to FT as a member and not always as a moderator. Yes, we try to respect members personal commitments and make adjustments. I think that says something more about FT, not something less.

Final word: all current applications are active and that means not only are they not rejected, but we are looking at things they are currently posting as to how well mannered they may be as volunteers.

I want to echo and annotate Randy's comments about adding new moderators in forums that already have them. I've been bugging Randy about adding some additional help in MilesBuzz and United, due to work issues (new responsibilites, new boss, more travel) for quite a while.

Randy added Chuck to United a while ago, and he was a God-send (pun intended ). The new additions to both United and MilesBuzz I expect to be just as valuable to the community as Chuck has been, as they are already proven contributors to FT.

Adding more moderators to a busy forum should not be taken by FT posters as a sign of stricter controls. Instead it is an opportunity for greater consistency.

The eighteen months I've been moderating have been great fun, and occasionally quite frustrating. I look at the addition of more moderators to FT as a very positive event. It is a commitment to the community's future.

The group of people who have so far been added as moderators throughout the boards are people I respect enormously. There are plenty of more opportunities for moderators available in the future. We have tons of contributors who can/will be fine additions to the cast of volunteers.

Craig
