As to legitimate users posting for the first time on already covered topics, I think the very minor disruption to established FTers (let's face it, if the subject looks like a question covered elsewhere, just don't view the thread) is outweighed by being welcoming to newcomers. Also, I've noticed that often people lurk for a long time because they think they have nothing to add. They'll then discover something new, and their first post if often a new thread of great value. It would be a shame to discourage this.

I don't think anyone system would work 100% efficiently but this seems to be best.
All I can say is that I wish the 'let ban newbies from posting threads' was in place when I started. Those on BA FT will know what I am talking about

Rather than restrict those with low counts from starting new threads, what about baseing it on length of membership. I don't post often simply because as you say so much has been covered, however I read, read, read. If I, a year later, have a question, I couldn't post it?? So rather, I spend a lot of board space entering time wasting replys just to get my count up?? Time of membership says a lot more than number of posts in many cases. Two cents from a person who loves flyer-talk, finds it invaluable but has no desire to waste your time with "filler posts." (although I just did one actually as I am close to being able to see coupon connection again (since the post limit was added)). I have been around two years and hate the now locked out postion I'm in even if I probably won't ever actually use the connection.

New posters
Maybe the software can be formatted to follow the first post with
"Try the Search feature and read the stickies" ...that would save some FT people some time.

here's a perfect example of a newbie starting a thread with a sponsored link in the wrong forum and against the TOS.

Actually, I don't think that's an example of what's being talked about here. That to me looks like spam, plain and simple.

I suggested to have a minimum post count to post a link because of all the spammers that show up.

So, as a reader I havent seen this type of activity get to the point that I would be willing to restrict new users to eliminate the problem. Now, I am not a mod so maybe they have a different point of view especially since they are the ones that have to deal with the issues when they pop up and since they are volunteers I would be more concerned about their time dealing with the issue than mine.
I dont think it is a bad idea just not sure if the activity level has reached a point to put this kind of thing in place.

I'm sorry if I didn't follow proper prodical. I receive my Amex centurion about a year and a half ago and found flyertalk. A lot of my friends have amex centurions so I thought it would be good to talk about the new anex titanium centurion. Again, I'm sorry if I offended anyone by starting a topic so early. You guys have some great posts.

I'm sorry if I didn't follow proper prodical.
But several members advised the new thread you did start was full of crapola.
I'd tend to agree with them as it happens, but that is not the point. You are free to start whatever threads you wish. And if members advise Mods they appear to be full of nonsense I imagine they may have a quiet word with you:

That's the usual proper prodical on FT.

As for what the TalkBoard is here for, I didn't think it was to insult new members, but who knows? Either way, just stay focused on the miles and points and travel info that you came here for and don't worry about the politics.

Welcome to FlyerTalk.

Instead, that's why we have a TalkTeam to help new members find their way around and correct any problems. As for people trying to game the system, I certainly know of a few longtime members who like to stir up trouble on the weekends or when the magazine has deadlines. Post count is far from an indicator of class or responsibility.
