We stayed at both this past summer. Depends what you are looking for.
The club lounge at he Sheraton is amazing. You get the infinity pool, a couple nice treats as a welcome gift. View from most rooms is better.
It is very crowded.
Royal Hawaiian is more upscale. Less impressive views, no club lounge, but better treatment by staff.
I found the rooms to be comparable, with a slight nod to RW.

Any chance the hotel themselves would be willing to change dates on a pre-3/4 reservation? LRM Taipei in particular, went from cat 5 to 6.

I assume you want the reservation changed but wish to keep it at the Cat 5 redemption rate. If that's the case, I doubt you will succeed. However, you never know without contacting the hotel either by phone or email.

Sheraton At The Falls Hotel, Niagara Falls, NY

Dear Lurker, per the announcement, the Sheraton At The Falls Hotel, Niagara Falls, NY became a category 2 property on March 4, 2014. It is now showing as a category 3. Are changes still being made this far after the Annual Category Change?

According to the Terms and Conditions of Membership in SPG, hotel categories can change at any time:

3.2.d. The amount of Starpoints needed to obtain rooms at SPG Participating Hotels varies by the category of the SPG Participating Hotel and may also vary by time of year. A list of SPG Participating Hotel categories is available on the SPG Program website (www.spg.com) under "Hotel Categories". Starwood may change the category in which a specific SPG Participating Hotel is classified at any time.
