Free Nights award / Cash & Points for a family of 3

Tried to book a room by SPG points for a family of 3(me, wife and 5 yo kid) and found that the free night/points and cash are only available for 2 guests max per room

SPG Free Night Awards booked online are limited to 2 guests per room. Call SPG Customer Care for additional availability.
Can I book a room for 3( 2 adults and 1 children) with the same points if I call SPG?
(10,000 points for Category 4)
I don't need an extra bed if it matters.

Some properties like the Sheraton on the Falls Hotel can add the number of children after you make the reservation if you call in and advise them. That may true of other locations.

make a dummy revenue reservation and see if the hotel will allow the 3 of you in the standard award room type. If yes, then it is safe to book the award room as 2 people.

Even if this does not work out, contact the hotel and ask them can their standard room accomodate 2 adults and a 5 yr old. Mostly you are ok unless the rooms are very small or the kids are older (>12yrs?).

Sometimes you see posts here about folk with kids and then it turns out the kids are 17 & 18yrs....ie essentially adults
