[This is an old thread but it's highly relevant, so I didn't want to to open a new one.]

Sheraton on the Falls at Niagara is charging customers who booked before the resort fee was announced...even after the FTC issued a warning about this kind of thing - http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2012/11/hotelresort.shtm

This is the key bit, which seems pretty reasonable to me:

“Consumers are entitled to know in advance the total cost of their hotel stays,” said Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Leibowitz. “So-called ‘drip pricing’ charges, sometimes portrayed as ‘convenience’ or ‘service’ fees, are anything but convenient, and businesses that hide them are doing a huge disservice to American consumers.”

They were specifically concerned about fees that are hidden, as opposed to ones that are not mentioned at all and then disclosed at check-in, but the same principle applies.

Sheraton on the Falls is in Canada. I'm not sure the FTC would have jurisdiction unless possibly because the reservation is made through Starwood which is located in the USA.

My apologies, but if it was me in this position, I would file a formal complaint and ask for my money back. You can do this by contacting Corporate Customer Service by phone at 800-328-6242 or by email at [email protected]. Or, if you'd rather, send us the details to the email address below.

I can assure you the FTC has no jurisdiction in Canada.

If I were in this position I would probably stomp my feet and make a big fuss at check in. But that's just me. And Mrs. Flews is doing her best to cure me of this.

Cheers,
Mrs. Flews must be Mrs. Mikeef's sister.

On the plus side, I heard that if you pay an extra resort fee, as a platinum, you are guaranteed access to the lounge.
