Wow... I think it's an overkill. Even Prince de Galles is now 6 (was 7 for a short time). What are going to charge? Euro 800 as deeply discounted rate (as Cat 7 W Maldives)? Rack of 1500? Probably just trying to capitalize of novelty factor...

A mistake IMO. This is going to adjust within 2 years to Cat 6 IMO. I don't see them being able to charge Cat 7 room rates with all the boutique options Paris offers. Once it becomes a Cat 6 we all will be able to check it out with Free Nights and maybe even cash and points (wishful thinking maybe).

Will be interesting when Prince De Galles opens up again as a Cat 6 roughly the same week as it is now.

Looking at rates for the end of July 2012, the Opera is $360 Euros whereas the Vendome is $347 Euros. No significant difference in rates but a significant difference in point requirements.

I was making some bookings and thought it would be interesting to document the prices I was seeing, mainly due to wild fluctuations.

This will be a cash cow IMO. I hope to check it out on my next trip to Paris but anything north of 500 USD a night and I can't really justify. It is was cat 6 at least I would consider it on c and p. I can see this dropping at some point to a cat 6 but regardless of that I think it will do very well.

30-35k points per night is a lot, especially when the Park Hyatt is 22k/night. You basically get 50% more nights there, but I guess this will be a bit more hip, although the fashion parties and such at the Park Hyatt were nothing to slouch at while we were there.

I agree it will be sold out during fashion events. But what about at other times? What will the prices be during August? Or Christmas? Or during the Milan, London or NYC fashion weeks?

I do believe that the Hôtel Costes will remain the place to be for the fashion world, and Mandarin Oriental, through its location, will be another important spot. Maybe the W hotel will compete with hotels like Pershing Hall (but which has a much better location).

People who used to stay at the Ritz will go to Le Bristol, Plaza Athénee and Meurice, but certainly not to W. The trend is also for the fashion world to move to luxury appartments like La Réserve, to have a more private experience.

I am not quite sure that the W brand is as hype as it was when it was launched.
Many hotels have innovative design now. And luxury hotels like Mandarin Oriental Barcelona not only have superb design but also quality of service, W hotels have not always.
The style of W hotels is stuck to 90s ... And became somewhat a copy and paste. In another word too déjà vu to be hype in capital of fashion.
