i can’t claim to be a member but citing a blogger doesn’t seem proof enough. I’ve got one friend who says nothing has changed and another that has owned for 20+ years and never known about VIP but admits to basically never traveling.

It's likely Starwood VIPs are transitioned into the Marriott Five Star with Ambassador status - a non-public tier that is invitation only.
