One alternative I can think of to maximise star operated flights would be to fly to Jo'burg or CPT on LH, and then continue on SAA to NBO.
Also out of the star FFP's I know that atleast LH and BD allow you to earn award miles for SAA flights also. So some consolation there I guess...

EK (Emirates) serves NBO from DXB. EK is not in *A but you can earn and redeem on UA. A roundtrip award ticket DXB-NBO-DXB costs 45,000 UA miles in Y, 95,000 in C, and 145,000 in F. Cash fares range from $500-1100 in Y depending on when you travel. The flight is about 4 hours flying time each way (5 hours scheduled door to door).
