*A RTW---"Open" Segments

I am planning on booking a *A RTW ex-YVR. . .how does one book an "open" segment? Can you have more than one? Do you need exact routings or just the carrier?

Thanks in advance for help

Having done this many times, you would would be wise to have a routing and a carrier, just leave the date open. This way you can call the carrier and put the date in when your itinerary is set. You can always change your routing before the trip starts however, BUT once the ticket is issued it will cost 75 dollars for a re routing. You cannot however change the routing of the first international segment after the ticket is reisssued without a complete ticket re pricing and reissue

You may leave almost everything open after your first seg but you'll at least need a routing and a carrier on open segs. As posted above once your trip is ticketed every change even to the open parts of your routing is 75 $ fee.

What are the rules for changing the date (but not the routing) of the first segment? later segments? - after the ticket has been issued?

So, one could not buy a 29,000 mile RTW Star Alliance fare and only book the first international flight and then book the rest later with no routing determined for the rest of the when boarding the first international flight? Or would this incur the $75 fee anyway?

This is correct. They want you to put your route in, with just the dates open (except for the first intercontinental segment). Revalidations (date changes etc) are free, so this is just simply an extension of this policy. Of course your ticket is valid for 1 year from the date of the first segment also.
