RTW - # stops - how does it affect the fare?
According to the rules of the RTW Star Alliance Fare, the minimum number of stops is 3. I would guess that the fare would go up significantly, if there are only 1 or 2 stops.

there is no StarAlliance rtw fare for only 1-2 stopovers.
My calculator has not enough capacity to add the individual fares of all oneway-segments/tickets

Anyway if you only had 1 or 2 stops it wouldn't really be a "round the world" fare in the sense they are intended. ie: 3 stops is a reaonable limit if you consider 1 in asia/southpac, one in europe and one in north america - there's your round the world trip. If you only had 1 or 2 stops you'd be doing a heck of a lot of flying of miles to get to those 2 stops and cover a RTW type routing....
The most similar fare I can think of is a circle pacific fare, but I think that may require 3 stops as well, but I could be wrong.

I have further questions on the definition of a stop:
1) do all 3 stops have to be external to the country you are originating - ie if I originate in Ottawa, Canada - can I stop in 2 foreign destinations, and a third one in Canada (eg Vancouver)?
2) a "stop" has to be over 24 hours long? If I "stop" in a city for less than 24 hours, it is not considered a stop - but a connection?

2. Yes and you are not allowed to take the next possible plane too, so a connection in RAR can be several days long.

fortunately the 'next flight rule' not being a stopover only counts in our favor.
If you need a stopover, than, at booking time already, ask expressively that such a stop (more than 24 hours but next flight) is marked as a stopover.

Exactly. I've had "stops" of just on or under 24 hours (usually at LHR) and that's fine. You just mark it as a stop when you book (ie: no "X" next to the city name on ticket) and that's fine.
