* RTW Routing Question

After reading the FAQ on the * Alliance
web site it seems I could do the following:

April '02
SAN->SYD
SYD->? (some other place in Australia)
?->SYD
SYD->SAN

Sept '02
SAN->MUN
MUN->SAN

I plan on going to Australia and Munich
(Oktoberfest) next year. A *RTW ticket
might be cheaper than buying separate
RT to SYD, travel in Australia, and RT
to MUN. From what I read in the FAQ,
it seems I would meet the requirements
of the RTW ticket(s) or am I missing
something in the rules?

Thanks

I don't think that's going to work. The glaring error is that it's not around the world. Second, I don't think you can transit your origin point.

And a second thought--I don't believe you can fly over the Pacific or Atlantic more than once. You're flying over both twice.

Always Flyin is right:
This is not considered to be a RTW but two RT tix.

You can't head back to origin within a RTW
You have to fly in one general direction.
You are allowed only one transatlantic and onetranspac segment.

If you are palnning a trip like that and want it to be a RTW you'd better do SYD (late april, I guess)- SAN - (late august ?) SYD as a sepaerate ticket and then continue your RTW starting from SYD via Asia to Europe to MUC before heading back home to SAN.

Always flyin and Bernie,

Here's a snippet from the * Alliance
FAQ on their web site:

http://www.star-alliance.com/isroot/...aq.htm#tickets

You can travel with any Star Alliance member
airline. The only condition is that you
start and end your journey in the same
country and you include at least one Atlantic
and one Pacific crossing in your itinerary.

So it seems what I want to do so far does
not break the above conditions. It does not
mention you actually have to go RTW. In
fact it almost seems like it's a ticket
with a certain number of miles you can
travel on it except that you have to
cross the Pacific and Atlantic at least
once and end up in the same country you
started from.

The FAQ might not be giving all the rules
but it does seem like you can cross the
Pacific and Atlantic more than once so
why not a RT from a city.

Hymph! Where is my *A chart when I need it.

But there is a nice brouchure that your travel agent will have with various routings for STAR 1,2 and 3.

On the back is the complex set of rules, but basically.

1. Travel must include one Atlantic Ocean and one Pacific Ocean crossing (one of each only permitted). Note - North,/Central Pacific is permitted
2. Travel must not return to originating city, and also country once the first international segment has been taken.
3. Also that travel must be in a generally east/west west/east direction so that you go RTW rather than just two RTs as suggested.

So once you have left the USA to go to Australia you cannot return to the USA as you cannot recross the pacific. The only way around this would be to buy a return in Australia (would be cheaper) to go SYD/LAX/SAN/LAX/SYD.

Just because the webite rules are glaringly vague does not make it legal

Thanks everyone for the info. The * Alliance
FAQ stating at least one Pacfic and one
Atlantic crossing is misleading. It
should state excatly one Pacific and one
Atlantic is required.

It depends on how you read it. I think most of the confusion started when you assumed that Round-The-World didn't necessarily mean that you have to travel round the world.
