I havent heard so many rumours, though I personally feels that all that is missing is an african carrier(South African?) and one Chinese Airline.

What about a Middle Eastern Airline?

Gulf Air and Emirates are both highly regarded.

I see that you can now earn UA miles on Emirates - perhaps that is the first step into the Star Alliance?

Hi,

South African has (unfortunately) gone into a codeshare agreement with Qantas.

That doesn't mean anything. They still have a codeshare agreement with LH and SRGroup holds a minority stake in SA...

I don't think it makes sense for SAA to join an alliance. It has formed close-knit code-share agreement with a number of different partners from a number of different alliances:
Delta - North America - Sky Team
Nigeria Airlines - joint operations from Lagos - JFK
Lufthansa - Europe - Star Alliance
Swissair - Europe - Qualiflyer
Qantas - Australia - oneworld

Adding Turkish Airlines to Star alliance would strengthen its alliance in the middle east and eastern europe.

I'd say that the best airline to complete the network would be Emirates.

Virgin seems a good choice to me, as they could battle Oneworld on the transatlantic sector to England. More competition...better for us!!!
