United E-Fare vs. Regular Fare

United E-Fare vs. Regular Fare
I thought I'd look into the E-Fare that United is promoting this week from Los Angeles to London for $498. Qualifing flights 934 on the 22nd, returning on #935 on the 26th. Just for the heck of it, I switched over to United Connection on the Web and priced the exact same flights. Guess what? It came out cheaper ($462)! So the E-Fare was MORE than the regular fare! And you can't even upgrade an E-Fare! Doesn't sound like such a deal to me.

PremEx: Check out the offers that Virgin (I'll plug them even though I won't use them!) launched on Monday.
They are doing London - LA return for 167 ($275). I am not sure if they will do a LA - London fare, but it might be worth looking into.
I am sending you an e-mail I sent to Rudi & Catman on the subject this weekend.

PremEx... If you can't get to London on Virgin via LAX... and really want to go...
you could try to find a cheap ticket to NYC
or East Coast area, then change for Virgin.
I learned the hard way about e-fares some
time ago when I didn't get upgrades or the
bonus miles. So unless I'm really despriate
I try ot shop around for fares.
My trip to San Diego next weekend was about
50 buck cheaper booked on United COnnection
than the e-fare offered!!!! And while I have
to change planes, that 50 bucks could go to
a nice Ruth's Chris Steakhouse dinner!

Thanks everyone for the tips. I just can't believe that United would promote these E-Fares as the least expensive special fares when you can get cheaper regular fares (and less restrictive plus booking bonuses) from them on the same flights! During the same time frame, I just found another United fare for $428!

In my UA statement yesterday, they announced that they will give bonus miles for booking on-line: 1000 for one booking, 3000 miles for two bookings, 5000 miles for three bookings and 10,000 for five bookings. There was a time limit on the deal; however, I can't remember when it expires. Check your statement for further details.

Sorry, my post above wasn't quite accurate. Here is the quote verbatim from the UA website:

I still haven't received my 1,000-mile credit for booking on-line last August using United Connection although the flights have posted. Perhaps this bonus offer wasn't in effect then....

I have received the 1000, 4000, and 10000 mile bonuses for booking on United Connection. Although the promotion specifies the web version, they seem to have included my PC version bookings as well.
The 1000 mile per roundtrip bonus takes several weeks to appear. It shows up as 500 extra bonus miles on one outbound and one inbound segment. The PC version posts quicker and appears as 4 250-mile credits.

ferry, the bonus for using United Connection on the web went into effect early in 1998 and has been in effect for the year. The bonus is 1K for a roundtrip, and there are additional bonuses (MPN 978) which you mention. You should have received the bonus by now, unless you had booked a e-fare. Check your activity on the United web site. If the bonus does not appear there you should contact United to receive it.
