You could go Europe to South America with LH or Varig,
but from there on it seems like you have to go to LAX to go to AKL (do they have a real transfer area now at LAX?) .

Not sure why this would help, but YVR (Canada) has a sterile in transit area and YYZ looks like will soon too: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum5/HTML/001600.html

Possibly HNL has a transit area.
I thought that Qantas (and Aerolinas Arg.) had a flight from Sydney to Buenos Aeres 2 or 3 times a week??
Also Lan Chile had a flight Santiago to Easter Islds, that continued to Tahiti, which could hook up to Qantas! Check if they still offer these.
Any flight between Brazil and Japan is making a stop in LAX only to load and unload Pax's. You don't have to get off the plane, so this would not count as transiting the U.S.
As for transiting in Canada, You would need a Canadian Visa (unless visa exempt) but these generally are much easier to obtain than U.S. Visa's.
Canadian Embassy Staff generally look at the applicants likely hood of going back to there home country or place of residence, but not like the US officials who seem to think everyone wants to stay in the US
6 Mos. ago my wife who has Canadian Residency was turned away at the US border going to NY for 1 week. I guess 4 yrs of living in Canada, having a job (with 2 children) and about to move into a new house just wasn't good enough for them!

Remember that you can still be pulled out of "In Transit". As I recently learned when I was yanked and subject to a body search in LAX, the airlines and US Customs and Immigration cooperate on monitoring who is on the flights and how they are flying. Nothing bad happened to me, as I hadn't done and wasn't doing anything wrong.
If they really want you, they can "grab" you. It has happened to others. There have been some high profile incidents in the news. If you can't afford to set foot on US soil, then I would suggest that "In Transit" in a US situation would not help.

As long as a passenger is not wanted for a crime, then he/she can not have any adverse action taken against them for being in transit.
I was deported from the U.S. yet I have been on flights making stops in the US. As long as I do not leave the Sterile area nothing adverse can happen to me.

on that topic, if I connect thru LAX and want to go outside the airport (say for about 4 hours):
- what address is to be filled in in the I94? the address of the airport?
- when coming back, where to leave the I94 appendix to document that I have quit the USA? normally this is done at checkin, but in this case I would already be checked in.

Thanks for your input guys.
As Canadian pointed out, yes, my main concerned is to avoid the visa hassle.
However, contrary to the 'obvious reason' mentioned by Peter42, I haven't got any problems with immigration in these countries (or anywhere else in the world, for that matter). It's just that I am travelling on
a Brazilian passport and, although I am welcome in nearly every country in the world without a visa (including the whole Western Europe, for example), the hassle to get a visa for US or Canada is simply not worth it, and therefore I will choose OneWorld instead of *A.
thanks once again

Concerning how to fill in the I94W (the green one)... when in transit, but going through immigration for a few hjours (to visit a club lounge for example).. all i do is put 'IN TRANSIT' on the form in place of hotel, and then just throw the stub in the bin at some later point when away from US.. i hardly believe that all those stubs are collected at reconciled...!
