It was off for 6 days - not sure what happened. I don't think the suspension of the offer was planned for, or else *A would have known about it in advance.

Maybe *A missed a commitment to HEX (do they pay a BAA fee for this, or is it tied into other terminal arrangements at T2?), or tried to argue about numbers (is it the fee linked to usage? I don't see conductors noting numbers).

I'm not sure how many people would pay for first class on a service like the HEX, but it's a nice perk. I used to use the similar upgrade you got with the BAA WorldCard; it was a shame when that stopped, but the current *A promotion is great while it lasts, and a another reason to maintain *G.

I'm also surprised BA/OneWorld didn't try and do something similar given that LHR is BA's home base. T2 as the *A terminal is a better experience for passengers than T5 as the BA terminal - the HEX/tube ride is shorter, the cab/uber ride is cheaper, security is a better experience, the lounges are better, there is no conformance, the whole operation feels slicker - and there is a Priority Pass arrivals lounge. It's by far the best terminal to fly through. Considering that LHR is BA's home airport, *A seem to have managed to secure a much better airport experience for their flyers than BA have.

(Star Alliance webpage for Heathrow Express Upgrade) Star Alliance and Heathrow Express have teamed up to provide upgrades to Star Alliance Gold Card holders travelling on Heathrow Express trains. Just purchase a standard class single or return ticket for the Heathrow Express, the fastest rail link between the airport and London Paddington Station. Once on the train, choose any available seat in Business First Class and show both your train ticket and Star Alliance Gold Card to the attendant.
Terms and Conditions for Heathrow Express Upgrade are unchanged from the wiki and state “You must present your original and valid Star Alliance Gold Frequent Flyer Programme card in order to receive the Offer offered by the Fulfilment Partner.”

Is this promotion still in effect? If so, is a boarding pass indicating * Gold acceptable in lieu of a Star Alliance Gold Card? Thank you.

Maybe they've changed the policy but the last couple of times I used this service the guard insisted on seeing a physical card, and wouldn't accept the electronic version (2020). Fortunately, I was able to find a physical card to show, but he was quite strident on this matter.

Maybe we can thank Covid for that - seemingly the end of exchanging anything physical!

Does anyone have experience or know if this promotion is valid when buying an accompanying child ticket (free 0-15)? T&C don't seem to exclude, unless somehow a child's ticket is not considered a "full fare standard class ticket."

Had no issues in the weekend by just showing my SQ e-card on my phone. Earlier I asked the conductor at Heathrow platform if the promotion is still valid and can I use my mobile, it was all OK.
