As cool as it would be to see Cathay join, I don't see it happening in the near future. Even if they did join, I could very realistically see Singapore Airlines consider leaving.

There have been discussions between CX and CA all along but perhaps CX is really pissed at QF with their Jetstar Hong Kong venture. This thing could really materialize this time around.

It's certainly true that CX is no friend of QF at the moment. And BA is no fan of QF either after they dropped BA and went with EK and because of that deal QR probably has no love for QF either. It's entirely possible that CX may be able to get up enough influence to simply push QF out of oneworld and resolve the issue that way.

I think your post reinforces this rumour back in 2011. Since then, CX has added Star member NZ in the mix.

Why become a mere prince in *A , when you're a King in OW ??
This doesn't look or sound right .

Not when SQ is shown the door! I guess NH is similar to CX in terms of quality (but dropping I might add), but if CX is being courted to join *A, it will be at CX's terms, not *A.

Yeah. Sq should join ow. Lol

LH4116 Sep 16, 2013 2:04 am

SQ would never approve. Unless they plan to form a new premium alliance of their own.

willski Sep 16, 2013 2:33 am

Would love it if KE then joined OW...

Would hate that as they are one of the most dangerous and unsafe carriers in the world.

The only way CX would be in Star Alliance is when the full take over from Air China is announced. Even then I wouldn't bet on them leaving as the Chinese could have their cake and eat it, by holding both alliances.

One world is already weak

If One World loses Cathay=They are DONE.

AA has few routes to SE Asia and India. BA's products are poor and availability for award seats is pitiful. QF is in melt down mode and booted BA as a partner to go with Emirates. If Cathay goes how is AA going to get passengers to HKG? Through Tokyo?

From an Award seat perspective......United has far more availability in Europe with the *A. However F&J seat availability to the USA is far easier to book on Cathay with One World.

This would make things interesting for sure. Not good for anyone.....

How is this any different from LH/LX restricting new F awards?

You can book LH F (new F) close in.

But I agree with you on LX and also OS.

I have no issue with airlines having preferential treatment for their own elites. But I think that all carriers in an alliance need to make some of their premium seats available to the fliers in other programs in the alliance.

themapelligroup Sep 16, 2013 7:45 am

I can't see a great advantage for Cathay in Star.
The formation of Jetstar Hong Kong and the dispute against Qantas is too weak to make them leave IMO.

It isn't very different....I just wasn't talking about them.
