Pretty ludicrous speculation. "Divorce" from alliance is very expensive. It usually only happens in member bankruptcy or merger, neither is in the cards for CX.
OK, now that I have mentioned it, shall someone start a thread of CX bankruptcy? :D:p Yes, CX may join *A if merged into, say, CA. CX is 18.77% owned by CA. But I don't see it happening in the foreseeable future. |

Adding my .02 to those who would like to see SQ out and CX in.
SQ is a lovely airline, but they are simply not playing by the rules of the club, and should be ejected from it. |
In my opinion strategically I do not think it would make sense for CX to join star alliance. Star Alliance is already well positioned in Asia with CA Hubs at PEK, PVG and CTU, BR at TPE, NH at NRT, HND, OZ at ICN, Thai at BKK and SQ at SIN. People may argue that SIN may be poorly geographcally positioned it has it role for Inter Asia traffic to India and Australia. CX is important for Oneworld inter Asia traffic with oneworld hubs at NRT, HND, HKG, KUL and SIN, HKG is important for oneworld to keep being their only link to china. People may not realize by kicking out SQ Star Alliance may shoot themselves in the foot for an Indian Carrier, with Jet Airways tied to Etihad now and the gong show at AI. With SQ and Tata Group starting an Indian Full service carrier I could see it joining star in the future. Even though China is an important region Star already has a strong presence and India would be just as important to the Alliance.

There is no *A flying HKG-LHR right now, am I right? If that's the case, then it would make sense for CX to be part of *A.

And LX. And LH via FRA. And LH via MUC.

Just heard a recent speech by CX CEO John Slosar. He talked really highly of oneworld and their partner AA. Unless it is a new development or something beyond his control, it's hard to imagine CX is even considering leaving oneworld.

I don't think BR nor SQ would approve if CX was admitted into *A.

SQ doesn't get much out of * - so the question must be if SQ forgo's a formal Alliance (like EK does on avoiding one) does TG and BR really put up much of a stink.
To be brutally to the point CX, QF and JL cover a great deal of Asia Pac. Better in cases than * Alliance where you backtrack painfully through PEK, ICN or NRT. Having the HKG hub is fairly centrally located and then having QF for Australia feed makes it compelling. If I did do a permanent relocation in the region CX is a great Airline with a great Alliance. Adding in MH recently makes the reach a little better in ASEAN but CX had that nearly all covered. NH out of NRT isn't well covered to ASEAN and TG is a two stop trek to BKK for Trans-pacific originating pax's. * got a little better with BR coming in but their frequency isn't great |
