The formation of Jetstar Hong Kong and the dispute against Qantas is too weak to make them leave IMO.

Ya, could just be posturing I suppose.

I was told they have no 'approval' nor 'veto' as in the past.

I can't see it happening though. Star is so well represented in Asia- what would Cathay add to Star???

THe middle east market since EK left UA, also the Australia market, since one of the original *A menber AN went under years ago, no one had filled the gap, NZ only filled it partially, but NZ is so restricted to C awards.

Even if they did join, I could very realistically see Singapore Airlines consider leaving.

Fine with me, since SQ is so restricted to F and C awards nowadays, not to mention restricted lounge use. When I am looking to fly to South Asia I am always looking for TG for the availabilty instead of SQ anyway.

Air China has a cosier relationship with LH than any other Asian airline, if CX their stepson to the south want in - they will get in

I thought the decision to let new airlines enter was made unanimously. Unless only the five founding airlines are the ones who decide?

Not too surprising, as NZ is one of the least integrated *A companies, followed closely by SQ.

I think that it would be more like *A wants CX rather than CX wants in even if it's unhappy with OW. I can't see how *A (or perhaps ST) wouldn't want CX should it decide to leave OW.

Maybe they would accept CX since it's such a key airline, but I could see how Star Alliance wouldn't want them -- most of what they would do is cannibalize traffic from other carriers. What would be the benefit to other members? Most of the long-haul members already serve HKG, so they wouldn't have much increase in feeder traffic for their short-haul networks. I suppose Star members could sell tickets to regional destinations with connections on CX/KA, but many of these destinations are already served by other Asian members.

On the other hand, if accepting CX means the end of oneworld, as another poster plausibly suggested, maybe it would be a good strategic decision if Star could take them on.

If the current lineup of Asian carriers can all coexist in *A, I don't see how swapping SQ for CX would be any different (unless their route maps are quite different).

I agree that swapping SQ for CX would be a net-plus for most Star Alliance customers and would leave the overall network more or less the same. (I would welcome it.) Even better if KA came with it.

Though I made my point without the assumption that SQ would depart as part of the deal. We always speculate about SQ leaving, but is that realistic?

GordonGordon Sep 19, 2013 5:17 am

Why does everyone think that SQ has to leave if CX enters *A? TG & SQ are still competitors but they seem to get along pretty well. OZ and NH also cope well with each other. The only *A member I dislike is NZ. Hope *A will get another airlines from Oceania and kick NZ out!

if KA came??

KA is CX with a different brand name, everything is the same even the interiors now

good lick trying to find another Australiasian carrier, considering the fact thait AirNZ owns a chunk of V australia and QF is closer to OW airlines than any star alliance member

Eva- they will not be happy with CX joining star- CX has a mini hub at Taipei and is dominant on the HKG-TAIPEI route apart from its Japanese routes

If SQ leaves this makes TONS of sense... I get the feeling SQ may be courted by SkyTeam to align with Virgin entities into SkyTeam.

With TG still in you get ASEAN presence

Which Virgin is in SkyTeam right now? Even Delta's 49% joint-venture in Virgin Atlantic isn't stopping Virgin in shying away from alliances.
