I really appreciate all of the information in this thread as I am just getting into researching a RTW ticket.
I see that RTW1 has recommended starting at NRT, thus saving some money (and my miles earned on a paid RTW would fund an award ticket to NRT from the US). If I were to start in NRT, does the RTW ticket need to be purchased from a *A carrier at its Japan location? (Other research had indicated that I'd need to Sykpe UA-Japan, for example, to successfully book a lower cost ticket.)
Thank you!

If you do your own homework figuring out how your route will be (and you should, even when using a TA it's best if you know what your options are) I personally feel it's easy to use the *A book-and-fly tool to plan your route and select flights. And then use that route and the tool to buy your ticket as well.
No need to call anybody, when you select Japan as your starting point you will automatically pay the Japanese prices. Ticketing will then be completed by LH and changes can be done by e-mail or phone.
You will also get the relevant booking references in your confirmation so you can reserve your seats with the different airlines.
