Speculation on next airline
I was reading the Plane Talking blog about the BR announcement and saw this.

Seems a little far fetched, but interesting nonetheless.

The Cathay Pacific leaving oneworld idea has been tossed around for a little while. If Cathay Pacific were to join Star alliance however, it would probably result in Singapore Airlines leaving. The two are fierce competitors and new members must be approved unanimously (I think). The relationship would be even worse then what Cathay and Qantas have going on right now.

From looking at their current routes, I was thinking the biggest objections would be from LH and UA. CX seems to be doing well with their routes from North America to HKG and they would compete with the LH group with flights between HKG and Europe.
Do they directly compete with SQ for the same reason?

I would gladly welcome CX into Star.
I don't know how many times I've seen Cathay flights that were priced right or had better schedules for me intra-Asia but I ended up taking something else like CA because Oneworld is far and wide my least favorite alliance. I've even taken CZ over CX because at least I can still see some value in Skyteam (benefits, not necessarily airline member quality).
As for SQ, it wouldn't hurt my feelings if they left. They don't play well with other Star members anyway. A large portion of their eco fares don't earn any miles and they give very scarce premium cabin availability to other *A programs for redemtion.

I don't think is impossible for CX to join *A. I think UA might be ok with it as long as they can get CX as part of TPac JV revenue sharing just like with NH. The government might want CX to cut some NY to HK frequency though.
Still I think both SQ and TG will throw a fit. To some extend NH will object also. You also have to wonder the purpose of BR joining *.
