According to their April 2011 inflight magazine, their fleet consisted of A320, A321, MD-83/83 and MD87. They got rid of their last B717 end of 2010/beginning of 2011, and I don't remember having seen any of their DC9s in the last few years.

But then again, yes, they had one of the oldest fleets around...

Replacing old Spanair routes

This may not be the right thread or the right forum, and it may deserve its own new thread, but I'm awfully curious which airlines will be picking up Spanair's old routes, particularly the domestic routes, and how quickly this will occur? I've read that Vueling and Iberia will pick up some, but it didn't appear certain which routes would be picked up by those airlines and how quickly they would start. I had award tickets on Spanair using US miles from MAD-LPA-MAD in late March / early April, and while I've gotten my miles / money refunded by US, I'm looking for inexpensive alternatives (and more flight options) for this route or a BCN-LPA-MAD itinerary that fits with my schedule.

No matter what good or bad things you have to say about Spanair, the loss of this airline has at least temporarily put a big dent in the number of domestic Spanish flights and there is no clear answer as to when these routes will be made available again by other airlines. I'm almost completely a *A flyer, but right now I'm searching for suitable alternatives for either of the itineraries above that will not completely destroy my wallet. :(

Anyone have any info on this? Thanks!

You may be better off buying a cheap charter package to LPA from another European city.

This would be suitable if we were not flying from USA-BCN and from MAD-USA 10 days later. It's a Spanish vacation and after looking at other options, getting to another European city to get to LPA or even connecting on a non-Spanish airline other than Ryanair and connecting through another country would consume far too much travel time to actually make it worth it. Thanks for that thought though. Unfortunate circumstances. :td:

Do you or anyone else know how long it may be before the number of flights between MAD-LPA and BCN-LPA is increased back to levels pre-Spanair shutdown?

Thinking a bit outside of the box, any chance USAir could find you alternative award seats to Madeira or Cap Verde on TAP? Not Spain, admittedly, but maybe more interesting than LPA.

Vueling have so far announced 40-some new routes all to begin by summer. Don't know where they are getting the aircraft.

They fly BCN-LPA multiple times a day, I was on the flight a few days ago and it was packed to the gills. You can also get UX flights from MAD.

And the flights to Canary Islands will probably be the first domestic routes to be taken over by others, because of the lack of alternatives. (No train, no ferry, ...)

This from Air New Zealand website. So probably JK has officially applied to withdraw from *A from the end of Feb.

If you are a Spanair Gold card holder travelling on Air New Zealand (or another Star Alliance partner) you are still entitled lounge access until the end of February 2012.

Yeah, JK has been holding them back from operating short-haul routes out of BCN for way too long

I have not flown in AI for over 15 years but from what I remember it was far better than JK.

Absolutely. There is no comparison between AI and JK at all.

In flight, AI is superior than even LH. If only they had the same amount of competence on the ground...

I have some miles from Spanair Star that are going to be useless
