re-check in at SFO
I will soon connect at SFO from UA to LH. but have 5 hours between. Assuming UA give me the boarding pass for my LH sector at my start point, what is the latest time I need to return to the airport?

I'd plan on at least 1.5 hours before LH departure to allow for security lines, and not worrying about
cutting it too close.

I too agree with the above poster here. Even though your bags are checked, you'll need to re-clear security if you leave the airport and return.

1.5 hours is safe, but at the maximum I'd be at the airport no less than an hour before departure.

And don't forget that it will take quite some time to, and come back from San Francisco, which is what you have in mind. Assuming no delays anywhere, you would not have more than one hour for sightseeing...
