FFP for kids

Now that Covid is over we are travelling a bit more.

Wife and me on A3, previously Gold but presently silver. Unlikely to get Gold again so really collecting for miles redemption. Want to get the kids on an FFP to start collecting miles for them.

(1) What is your home airport? (SFO, LAX, MCO, etc.) HKG
(2) What types of fares do you usually buy ? (C, F, Y, etc.) Normally Y, sometimes PE
(3) How many miles do you usually fly each year? (<25K, 25k-50k, >50k) 25-50k
(4) Do you have any kind of status at present? What is it? (UA Silver, M&M Senator etc) Nothing
(5) What is most important to you in a FFP? (Frequent upgrades on travel, priority services when flying the airline, good award redemption rates, free lounge access, etc.) Redemption
(6) Which routes do you fly most often (US Domestic, Transpacific etc) Mainly Asia, but once a year to either Canada or the UK
(7) Preferred Airlines: No preference
(8) Do you travel for work or pleasure? (Can you chooose your airlines, class of service?) For the kids, all pleasure

Never had useful amounts of travel on *A before, favoring Oneworld for the routes I've usually taken. Recently spent the last of my Avios and not many AA miles left. I do have 90k Amex Membership Rewards for which I have no particular plans.

I have a flight booked BOS-SFO-TPE,TPE-LAX-BOS in early August. The US domestic legs are JetBlue Mint (irrelevant here I suppose) and the trans-Pacific legs are on EVA Air in premium economy (P and K buckets).

I have long-dormant accounts at Asiana with 20k miles and EVA with zero. Wondering which of those I should credit the EVA flight sectors to.

We are tentatively looking at a RTW in the next year or two and were intending Oneworld DONEx i.e. business class. No reason we need this to be on Oneworld if I'm starting to get status elsewhere, but with business class we'd get most of the same benefits as status anyway.

Would appreciate any insight! Thanks.

(1) What is your home airport? (SFO, LAX, MCO, etc.) BOS
(2) What types of fares do you usually buy ? (C, F, Y, etc.) economy for personal, premium economy for work
(3) How many miles do you usually fly each year? (<25K, 25k-50k, >50k) likely to be 2-3 return trips to TPE in the next 12 months. otherwise 1-2 transatlantic per year. I guess that'd be 25k-50k for sure, or >50k if I really prioritize *A.
(4) Do you have any kind of status at present? What is it? (UA Premier, M&M Senator etc) none
(5) What is most important to you in a FFP? (Frequent upgrades on travel, priority services when flying the airline, good award redemption rates, free lounge access, etc.) lounge access, priority services. I often struggle to find good uses for miles I accumulate.
(6) Which routes do you fly most often (US Domestic, Transpacific etc) very little US domestic. will be transpacific for work and transatlantic for pleasure
(7) Preferred Airlines no experience with any *A airlines in last 10+ years
(8) Do you travel for work or pleasure? (Can you chooose your airlines, class of service?) for work I can choose my own itinerary but limited to premium economy unless exceptional circumstances

Are you familiar with which *A programs are the easiest to get *G with?

I am not. I did try to research (a little, admittedly) but the threads I find on here to help with that are very old.

Ok there was a thread which was here but seems to have gone missing? It was called something like "Alternatives to Asiana Club to earn Star Gold Easily"

Anyways, Asiana is easy but faces an uncertain future with the potential Korean acquisition. TK, SK, and A3 are other options. A3 recently raised requirements, but you can still do the old easy qualification if you can fly 4 segments on A3.

potfish Jul 17, 2023 3:18 pm

That's very helpful, thank you.

I don't think A3 is a possibility. After that, looks like I would need 40,000 miles to get to *G on either TK, OZ or 45,000 for SK.

It certainly looks like crediting to Eva Air is a bad idea.

There is no free seat selection as a Star Alliance benefit. For the others, it sounds like Star Gold is what you would be aiming for. Given that you mostly fly intra-Europe, give Aegean a look. They have steep requirements that get reduced significantly if you can fly Aegean a few times a year.

Could you clarify what you mean by not getting screwed over and using points to buy merchandise?

SPN Lifer Sep 3, 2023 10:08 pm

In several frequent flyer programs, points can be redeemed for magazine subscriptions or merchandise. The cash value of such redemptions is usually horrible, much worse than redeeming for travel.

Yet the original poster (OP) is indicating a desire, if not actually be able to redeem points to fly, at least to get some value out of points earned.

London based, frequent travels to everywhere

(1) What is your home airport? (SFO, LAX, MCO, etc.) - LHR, LGW + LCY
(2) What types of fares do you usually buy ? (C, F, Y, etc.) - Don't know what these letters mean, but usually cheap economy for short hauls (within Europe) and cheap business for long hauls. At minimum the fares will includes a checked-in bag.
(3) How many miles do you usually fly each year? (<25K, 25k-50k, >50k) - 25-50k.
(4) Do you have any kind of status at present? What is it? (UA Silver, M&M Senator etc) - None
(5) What is most important to you in a FFP? (Frequent upgrades on travel, priority services when flying the airline, good award redemption rates, free lounge access, etc.) - Priority services when flying on alliance partners.
(6) Which routes do you fly most often (US Domestic, Transpacific etc) - London-Singapore, London-Geneva, London-India, London-Sweden.
(7) Preferred Airlines - I haven't really flown Star Alliance airlines before, and will only do so now onwards for business reasons. But I would like the nicer airlines, like Turkish or Swiss.
(8) Do you travel for work or pleasure? (Can you chooose your airlines, class of service?) - Generally for work. There is some flexibility over airline choice depending on price difference. Short travels are in economy, long in business. For personal, all is in economy unless prices are good for business.

I am flying Turkish airlines soon (but I dont know if I will ever fly them again) by chance. I still think Turkish is the best option as I go to India/Singapore a lot, so if I do need to fly Turkish to retain status, I can always opt for Turkish instead of the usual Emirates/Qatar and retain status this way. Let me know your thoughts :)

C (or J) = business, F = first, Y = economy

(3) How many miles do you usually fly each year? (<25K, 25k-50k, >50k) - 25-50k.

Star gold is when you start getting priority services.

(6) Which routes do you fly most often (US Domestic, Transpacific etc) - London-Singapore, London-Geneva, London-India, London-Sweden.

Turkish is one of the easier programs to earn star gold with. Note that you can fly other *A airlines and still credit to TK. TK may be the best option to India, but SQ is good as well. When flying Swiss, be aware of the dreaded P fare class. This is the cheapest business fare class and credits 0 to a number of programs.

FF to switch

I earned UA 1K status in 2022, and due to the PQP requirements I don't think I can get it this year. So I am thinking of a status match to another SA airline. Plus, flying from SFO means there are always 5 - 10 GS in front of you for upgrades...

Here is my info:
(1) What is your home airport? (SFO, LAX, MCO, etc.)
SFO
(2) What types of fares do you usually buy ? (C, F, Y, etc.)
Premium economy or business (if less than 3k)
(3) How many miles do you usually fly each year? (<25K, 25k-50k, >50k)
About 4 - 5 inter continental (USA to Asia/South America/EU etc) and a few domestic (< 5)
(4) Do you have any kind of status at present? What is it? (UA Silver, M&M Senator etc)
UA 1K
(5) What is most important to you in a FFP? (Frequent upgrades on travel, priority services when flying the airline, good award redemption rates, free lounge access, etc.)
Upgrading to business class or buying cheap business classes (such as Zipair) for long haul international flights. So award redemption and upgrades would be great. However, if J classes are cheap enough (3.5 K for SFO <-> EU for example) I will consider buying it using cash.
(6) Which routes do you fly most often (US Domestic, Transpacific etc)
Asia 1 or 2 times, EU 2 times, and then other continents.
(7) Preferred Airlines
I like JL and ANA. UA is just so so.
(8) Do you travel for work or pleasure? (Can you choose your airlines, class of service?)
Half work half leisure. I can book airlines myself.

Irishtraveler Sep 15, 2023 10:43 pm

Hi can you help me in choosing a frequent flyer program. One person recommended joining LH miles and more someone else suggested joining SQ Krisflyer. I need a program that earns points and miles on LH P fares..
My home airport is DUB.
I typically fly premium economy or J on long haul and Y short haul.
I typically fly 50k+miles each year.
I currently have Oneworld status BA Silver.
Most important to me is Lounge access and good redemption rates.
I mostly fly transatlantic. Destinations are BOS,EWR,LAX,ORD,SFO,IAD.
My most flown airlines are LH,LX,UA. I'm sometimes on SQ,AC,SK but less than the other airlines.
I travel for both work and pleasure I can choose my class and airline for both.
