*A RTW Choice in C
I am finalizing a RTW booking routing JNB-HKG-SFO-LAX-FRA-JNB for a trip in July.
I managed to find availibality on the following carriers and flights:
JNB-HKG: TG (via BKK), no D seats on SA or SQ
HKG-SFO: UA on 744 or SQ on 773 (worth it to pay the $500 charge on SQ?)
SFO-LAX: UA upgraded to F
LAX-FRA: LH on 744/346 or UA
FRA-JNB: SA via MUC or LX via ZRH
Please comment on the coices available as I normally only use SA/EK/LX for business travel.
As this will only be a 10 day trip I would only want to travel in C, can I upgrade a Y RTW booking or would it be better to book the C RTW fare.
Thanks

I would go for UA on this leg, too.
AFAIK SA offers fully lie flat seats. LX doesn't. The old C seats on the 343 are dreadful.
There are multiple threads here on FT saying that service on SA can be a real hit and miss, though.
If you want to upgrade a YRTW you must upgrade every single leg. That for sure would be the biggest waste of miles and money (for the YRTW) ever. Let alone finding award seats on all of those legs.

When I did my *Lite RTW in 2006 this was not the case. I upgraded MUC-BKK for cash and IAD-LHR with miles. Everything else was in Y. Have the rules changed?

Of course it is up to you which segments you are willing to upgrade with miles/cash. But since the OPs routing mainly consists of long hauls and he wants to complete the RTW within ten days it is safe to assume that he might have thought about upgrading the whole thing.
