I don't think that the $500 charge is worth it. UA's 744 is equipped with a fully lie flat seat, too, and you might be able to grab a seat on the upper deck.

AFAIK SA offers fully lie flat seats. LX doesn't. The old C seats on the 343 are dreadful.
There are multiple threads here on FT saying that service on SA can be a real hit and miss, though.

If you want to upgrade a YRTW you must upgrade every single leg. That for sure would be the biggest waste of miles and money (for the YRTW) ever. Let alone finding award seats on all of those legs.
