It flew 30 minutes from MDW to ORD. You can make it faster by car*

*When there's no traffic on Stevenson Expressway and 294.

And that's the most beautiful hour that occurs once a year

Curious about logistics here. Did the plane gate? If so, what/whose gate did they use? Or did the passengers just wait on the plane for the replacement?

From twitter:
#WN1914 parked at C11 - WN has a ground handling agreement with UA for when this sort of things happens

I can only assume it took the typical +/- 45 minutes to taxi to the gate?

But the replacement plane only took 19. That would truly be miraculous in a car.

Why divert to ORD? Longer runway?

Actually *8* longer runways--

MDW: http://155.178.201.160/d-tpp/1706/00081AD.PDF

ORD: http://155.178.201.160/d-tpp/1706/00166AD.PDF

With very few exceptions, MDW is not the place you wanna come back into with an emergency...the cramped field is not at all forgiving.

Yep, that's what I figured. Thanks!

Am I the only one who's surprised WN didn't get a couple buses to bring the passengers back to MDW? Even a 19 minute flight had to be pretty expensive, hell, they probably could have put each passenger in his own taxi and saved money.

Someone mentioned they have an agreement with United to use their gates for situations like this. I'm guessing that's a fairly one-sided agreement since I doubt United would ever have to divert to HOU or DAL, so I bet that had to cost Southwest a pretty penny. I'm sure the agreement isn't for free services, probably more like "We'll be glad to help as long as you can hand over a blank check"

I saw this plane parked on the ramp after landing at ORD yesterday. I wondered what was going on!
