As a former NCer, the first thing that rings a bell is Old Salem, not far from GSO, and and 60-90 minutes from GSO. But there are various attractions near CLT, RDU, and GSO.

I recommend the Monet in Normandy exhibit in Raleigh. Be sure to buy your tickets in advance.

Not a hard and fast rule, but the bigger the city, the higher the culture. I'd stick to Raleigh or Charlotte, but you might find Ashville or Wilmington a pleasant place to visit. Can you be specific about what you'd like to experience; art, dance, lectures, theater?
