weekend drive to the Keys

I'm going to take a weekend drive through the Keys. First such drive for me.
I'll be going down on Saturday afternoon and returning to Miami on Monday morning.
How's the traffic?
Any tips on a weekend in the Keys would be greatly appreciated. I'm a senior citizen, so I don't expect to be getting into any trouble.
Thank you.

It depends on the season, but weekend traffic is generally heavy. If you're going all the way to Key West you've have some congestion at various points along the way, key largo for example. You'll manage anyway. The speed limit is low anyway, mostly 45 mph, but you'll probably want to stop often. I have always enjoyed the drive, even with traffic.

Weekend traffic can be busy, plus it's spring break time, so there's additional vehicles to account for. Normally, I'd say plan on at least 3.5 hours on the highway. If there is an incident along the way, chances are traffic can come to a standstill for a while. Keep that in mind if you are coming back to catch a flight Monday. It'd be better to leave earlier Monday and if there's no traffic problems, get back to Miami early and enjoy lunch somewhere.

Duval St. will be a spring break zoo, especially on Saturday and Saturday night. That means parking will be tough to find. I'd suggest heading to some of the local establishments "off the beaten path", hop on one of the Trolley or Conch Train tours, and/or taking a stroll thru the Key West Cemetery and reading the tombstones.

Thanks for the advice.

It was a fun roadtrip.
Lots of cars, and I laughed when traffic suddenly came to a complete stop on the highway because one of the locals needed to turn left.
Yes, Key West was a zoo; but I was able to enjoy it because I had been forwarned.

Thanks again.
