Bid for J Upgrade

Starting a new thread because the last data points were from quite a long time ago.

I'm flying IAD-JNB and considering an upgrade offer. The bidding range starts at $1300 but a $1400 bid gets you into the "strong" category.

Any recent data points on what offers are being accepted vs. rejected?

I wonder how much it would take to get SAA into the "strong" category in a bid for survival.

A whole lot more than $1400...

Any data points for IAD-ACC?

What is the difference between a straight up buy-up to J vs. bidding for J?.

Any info would be much appreciated.

Before the flight, I was offered a “strong” bid of $1350 to buy up to J, but that was both legs from IAD-JNB. When I was at IAD, I overheard someone say the airport upgrade from IAD-ACC was $900.

What's the typical cash cost to buy J? About $5000-$6000 for a return ticket?

Yes, about $4 to $10 for full fare.

Thank you, that is useful info.

Were you on a South African plated ticket or a codeshare? I am stuck on a JetBlue plated ticket and worried that I won't be able to upgrade as a result. ANA wouldn't touch a UA codeshare, even though I was begging the gate agents to take my money. Whereas SN (Brussels Airlines) happily took my cash to upgrade on a UA codeshare.

Any experience on whether codeshare tix can buy up on South African?

Thank you kindly!

I flew IAD-ACC a few days ago and can confirm that the price to purchase an upgrade at the counter was indeed $900.
