Do not forget that China is a large and mostly Skyteam-oriented market.
It is increasingly important for Korean carriers especially for KE since neither CZ or MU are well developped on long-haul traffic.
The OZ crash at SFO showed that half of the pax were Chinese. And OZ is a smaller carrier to CA internationally vs KE to CZ/MU. And it still attracts load of Chinese. Now imagine how important is China (thus Skyteam's CZ MU) to KE.

You may say Skyteam has a large presence in China, but to say China is a largely and mostly skyteam-oriented market is...er...very wrong.
That is the precise the reason Korean needs to go out from Skyteam. Because all the Chinese, if loyal to Skyteam, will choose its home airlines instead.

Well I said,
1/ China is a large market
2/ Mostly (and not largely as you misread) skyteam-oriented as 2 out of 3 of the largest carriers are members with MU whose home base PVG is the largest business market.
I should have added that these carriers are still very domestic-focused and they are still lagging CA on long-haul. They do command a large base of domestic flyers in China that will turn to international at some point. Therefore the need or attractiveness of KE is important for the Chinese market as long as MU and CZ haven't developped their LH capacities.
Even in this case, ICN remains the only long skyteam haul hub in north east asia. That would not be the case with *A (with PEK, ICN and NRT) or with Oneworld (with NRT).
What is the alternative for KE ? Oneworld ? They wouldn't have any feed from China, would have backtracking Japanese feed (even if they do compete efficiently with high fare Japanese carriers). But Japan is an ageing dwindling country, China's not.
