Quick Questions re SIN

Will be spending a total of 7 days in SIN in near future on each end of a trip to Australia. Is it possible to locally rent cell phone for incoming emergency calls only from US (in other words, per minute costs not a factor)? If so, are they easily available at airport or shopping malls?

Second, do 4-5 star hotels have plug converters for US small items like notebooks, etc? No transformer needed, just plugs. Or, should I purchase before leaving US at Radio shack, etc.?

Thanks. This is not a trip I'll be repeating with any frequency so am not interested in purchasing these types of equipment if it isn't necessary.

Any 4-5 star hotel I've stayed in Singapore has all in one wall sockets, at least in the desk area, that accept all three plug types, US flat pin, European round pin or three pin UK type.

Thanks; that is very helpful.

I know that some of the top hotels will let you borrow a cellphone (for a fee).

Also, if you can get hold of an unlocked triband phone, you can pick up a SIM card without any problems at all for literally a few dollars. You do however need to present a passport to get this sorted out.

Your best bet for covering your entire trip would be to buy a triband GSM phone in the US, or any cheap phone in Oz/Singapore. In Sing, basic models start at under S$100 (~US$60) new and used ones can be a fraction of that. Then buy prepaid cards in both Oz and Sing, easily and cheaply available in any convenience store.

That seems like a good idea, as does the one about "borrowing" a phone from the hotel. Maybe the hotel would allow that one to go with me to Oz since I will be returning to the same hotel going home.

Appreciate all the ideas and will take them with me today when I leave US.
