OT: Why Classified Ads in the Straits Times
Whenever I pick up a copy of the Straits Times, I always wonder why there is such a large classified ads section in there. This has disappeared in most newspapers due to the Internet. Is there some special law or tradition that explains their continuation in Singapore ?

Google is your friend. Print classified ads down about 80% from 2000 across all US print newspapers. Online classifieds up. Anyone have an answer to the OP’s very interesting question?

I still see a lot (relatively) of classified and other ads in English language newspapers in South Korea and Japan.
Does anyone know about the case in Paris, for example, where the old IHT traditionally had lots of ads aimed at expats?
I also see lots of classified ads in some of the various English language free (Where, What's On, etc.) monthly city guides (where still available) aimed at both tourists and expats, plus sex worker and language conversation offerings between locals and tourists/expats. Popular categories seem to be meetings (including AA), charities and help services (such as suicide prevention lines), used furniture, apartments and hotels, restaurants, foreign language worship services, clubs for expats, matchmakers, employment especially as tutors and translators but also waitpersons and lounge entertainers, legal/visa services, etc.
