Why not just ban them altogether? Just make it illegal to sell them.

No, as we know, banning does not work, but high taxes and slooooowly squeezing - does, but takes time.

Honestly I am still surprised by number of people smoking with prices\restriction, especially young women. It might be subjective opinion but in San Francisco and Bay Area, California less people smoke than here in Singapore.

Banning doesn't work? How's that chewing gum habit work out in Singapore?

Do you know how many gums are smuggled via Changi and in one's pockets at Woodlands?

Banning gum? Many people just buying packs of it, and bringing it in their luggage and never been asked about it at arrivals, despite it going through the xray at the end.

In any case, like Warren Buffet says, tobacco is great "It costs a penny to make. Sell it for a dollar. It's addictive. And there's fantastic brand loyalty."
The Singapore government ain't stupid; people get addicted and so it's an easy way to make money.

I was stopped at Woodlands checkpoint and they confiscated 4 pack of gums I had. I was also told not to do it again because it can be a ground for deportation.
