Food question

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide. I am not a foodie and due to a low calorie / low carb diet I want to try maintain while in Singapore I want to find in advance if I'm going to run into issues or not.

Do most business offices in Singapore (Orchard / Herrren area) have cafeteria's and if so do they typically have some American food (low calorie such as grilled chicken, salad bar (make your own), etc)? If not, close by?

In the general area of the Marriott and Hilton on Orchard is it easy to find the same type of food?

Businesses in Singapore generally do not have their own cafeterias (the locals call them canteens), mainly because there is no shortage of food places in Singapore. Having said that, many of the local type places serve local food (Asian, Singapore/Malaysia style - in the US it would be Penang or Chinese Malaysian style restaurants). However it seems you're after Western food. There's quite a few Western restaurants around. However from the sounds of what you are after, the closest I can think of is a sandwich chain called O'Brien's. Try this website:

http://www.obriensonline.com/ASIA/Food/docs/food.pdf

I don't know if there's one around the Orchard area although the concierge at the hotel where I presume you will be staying should be able to help if you tell them you want O'Brien's or something similar to that.

As for American style restaurants in the vicinity of the Marriott and the Hilton, the Hard Rock cafe (easy three minute walk from the Hilton) and Dan Ryan's (seven minutes from the Hilton) should fit the bill.

If you'll be at a place where you can do some light cooking, Jason's Supermarket in the basement of Orchard Towers (catecorner from the Hilton and close to the Orchard Hotel) has a fairly large expat friendly selection of food products and has the highest probability of stocking the low carb and low calorie foods you're looking for.

In conclusion this shouldn't be a big issue. If you can stand going to restaurants all the time, finding cooperative chefs (especially along either side of Orchard Road between the Hilton and the Centrepoint Shopping Centre) shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you dsgtc0408 for your answer to this question and all the other threads I had questions on!

A question for you if you know the answer! I know there are certain items you can not bring into Singapore (flying from the US to Singapore through Toyko). Can I bring in "diet" food for my stay without issues? These are like meal replacement bars, shakes (powder only in single serve packets), etc?

Definitely not a problem. I've brought in stuff for body builder friends, it's no issue. In fact, GNC has a franchise here; the things they sell here sure look familiar to what I see at GNC back in NY. So if you need more there's a good chance you'll be able to get extras. But just in case, be sure to bring all your products in the original packaging (in other words, don't empty out the packets of whatever into unlabeled containers).

To be extra sure, you can surf for Singapore Immigration and Checkpoints Authority or Singapore Customs for info on what is restricted.

@funtotravel

we are alot more Americanized than what you are probably think. Prepare to pay more for low carb diet.

if you are in town, this is rarely an issue.

While I was in SIN recently, it looked like there was a GNC store in every little mall!!!
No dearth of variety of food in the Orchard area. I am sure you can find something that you can work with.
