Yes, entirely possible. But having two separate tickets would mean the first ticket would be very easy to move (with penalties and/or additional collection), or even drop altogether and find a way on another carrier (as forfeiting the first ticket would not/should not impact the second, all the TA needs to do is remove it from the PNR, unless it's a "conjunction ticket" - but do they even offer them for the same airline?). This does not seem to be the case here.
