RC Buckhead Renovations

Just returned from a trip to Atlanta where I noticed that several floors of the RC Buckhead were dark and without window treatments, lending me to believe renovations are finally underway. Has anybody experienced this direly needed product update? Sadly, no information is provided on the hotel's website...

The 553 rooms are currently undergoing a $38 million renovation (to be completed in summer 2008); newly updated units have gleaming mahogany floors in the entranceway, custom millwork cabinetry, new jewel-tone fabrics, flat-screen TV's, and iPod docking stations. Many have updated bathrooms too, with glass step-in showers and rainfall showerheads.

I was there on 5/20, stayed on the 6th floor that was just recently done. The finer details have slipped away from my memory--too many hotel rooms since then--but I thought it was nicely done. Much brighter colors and a modern look. Gone are the 18th century flower/bird drawings, dark wood furniture and heavy wallpaper of the classic RC look--clearly they are aiming for the younger luxury guest--as I understand they must do.

The baths are shower only, glass door, bench opposite the shower, a big rainforest head and a hand shower as well.

The LG TVs found elsewhere are there.

I also seem to recall an Ipod dockable alarm clock.

I am not sure if there were wood floors in the entryway before, but it is there now.

Overall quite nice and quite needed. Wished I recalled more, but if you were avioding this property it may be worth returning to once things are done--consider giving it a while however, there was some construction noise above may that may be an issue for some.

Considering how the traffic was last time we were in Atlanta (last year - traffic was awful) - I'd said your hotel choice should be based in large part on what part of the city you want to be in. That said - the rooms in the RC Buckhead are small - and I doubt any renovation will make them larger. Robyn

The rooms in the RC Downtown Atlanta are also being renovated now.

This sounds promising re: Buckhead.

I think we have a general consensus in in this forum that there are old-gen RC/FS and new gen RC/FS and the differences between the hotels from each generation can be large.

Old-gen RCs are trademarked by their fox hunt themes in public & private spaces and white marble baths with tub/shower combos. Old-gen FS' have somewhat sterile decor/furnishings, near rock-hard carpets, and shower/tub combos even in suites.

Most of the renovations that have been going on the last 5 years do not come close to succeeding in transforming an older gen property to a newer gen property. The only exception I can think of is RC Palm Beach. FS BOS did little to improve the bathroom situation, ditto for FS DC, I havent been to RC Laguna since the reno, RC SFO's reno wasnt noticeable to me in August in the way Im describing.

It sounds like this *may* be an exception akin to the RC PBI. Given that this is the only lux option in North ATL, let's hope that's the case.

The Mansion on Peachtree, just south of the RC could be considered....
