These off-PNR benefits are limited to when you are also a traveler on the same flight.

An elite, if in E+ on the same flight, can guest a companion (a Plat & higher can do up to 8) into E+ for no extra fee, will require a phone call.
An elite, if in sitting in "preferred seats" on the same flight, can guest up to 8 companions into "preferred seats", for no extra fee, will require a phone call. Note this will not override Basic Economy restrictions.
The companion can accompany the elite thru check-in, security, and boarding.
If traveling international, one companion can accompany the Gold or higher elite to a lounge
On CPU flights, the elite can request a single off-PNR companion, on a paid ticket, to be added by the GA (only) to the gate list for upgrades (at elite's status) Not a formal policy but a practice some GAs will do - a carryover from pmCO days.

The things that may be available, YMMV,
1) the check-in bag allowance. Sometimes the UA bag counter agent may extend the elite allowance, others per policy, will not. If originally on a common PNR, the policy allows extending the bag allowance, Check as many bags as allowed on the elite PNR.
2) Onboard, the food & beverage benefit for 1K/GSs is occasionally extended to the companion but this would not have been a benefit even on a common PNR.

The term "linked" PNR is not a formal process and has no real impact. It might mean a comment was added to the PNR but that comment has no real impact. Off-PNR companions are handled by a manual process and the computer systems are unaware of any relationship.

The elite benefit to guesting companions into E+ is clear IF on the same PNR
Silver - 1 companion at check-in
Gold - 1 companion at booking
Plat/1K/GS -- up to 8 companions at booking

What is the story if the companion(s) are not on the same PNR, so-called "off-PNR"?
There is no known published policy for this. It was there for pmUA but it disappeared after the merge and there were rumors it was gone.
Since then, elites have generally been able to get the same equivalent benefit even if the companions are not on the same PNR.
There are a few general requirements
-- The elite and companions need to on the same flight (this is essentially an absolute)
-- The elite and companions need to be in the same cabin at the time of the request (there has been some reported wiggly room on this but best to assume it is a hard requirement)
------ in the distant past, at one time, pmUA required the elite to be seated adjacent to the companions, that requirement disappeared years before the merger.
-- If a seat sweep occurs (due to an aircraft change and in some cases a schedule change) the companions may lose their E+ seats -- but the elite can call and get them re-assigned

Occasionally, an agent will claim this is not policy. Don't push it, as there is no written policy, but HUCA

UA has a special case policy if one is a cash traveler and the other is an award traveler, Combine reservations into one PNR? No but "Linking" PNRs, limited E+ benefit.

Related threads Economy Plus for Companions: Now must be on same PNR -while this was first reported after the merger and turned out not to be true, it was likely pmCO agents or confusion do the lack of a published policy

I love flying on European airlines where they make people who cheat/mis-board step aside and wait, while suffering evil stares during their very public shaming. 😁

however, the same is true in Europe, you can take a companion w/ you with pre-boarding w/ your zone. Never seen any pushback on that TBH

Absolutely! My comment was merely that I have found European airlines to care more about boarding order than US ones. I have never seen any airline not being willing to let a group board together, even if they are in different groups.

Southwest typically doesn't let you board with companions in earlier groups (at least prior to recent changes).

This makes sene given how much those boarding groups are very much marketed as part of the product.

Do agents still have the ability to assign off-pnr companions to preferred seating. UA Silver on one pnr with 3 other passengers on separate pnr, all the same flights on the same date. I thought I've read UA is starting to get hesitant doing this?
Note Im not speaking of E+ seating, just preferred.

I think you can do that in the app now, "link your trips"? It says "linked premier members may share benefits, if available". Never done it so not sure if it's automatic or if you have to talk to the GA day of or call in before OLCI.

edit: well....one of the reservations have to be an award booking

Business class ticket for me (Gold). Will my companion get an Economy Plus seat?

I am a Premier Platinum member. So my companions with non basic economy tickets can get an Economy Plus seat on the same flight.
I have done this multiple time when I travel on regular economy class tickets and I enjoyed seating together with my companions.

This time I booked a Business class ticket for myself and my family member booked a non basic economy ticket on the same flight.
So we will not be seating together. I am wondering if my family member can get an Economy Plus seat in this case.

Thank you.

Earlier this month, I called UA reservations and they did just that for my colleague traveling in regular economy. I was in domestic shorthaul first, and I am 1K. I had her PNR handy and said we wished for her to sit closer to me. Without further ado, the agent asked me which E+ seat Id prefer for her, and then her seat assignment was changed at no charge.

Maybe I'm missing something here but if you and your companion each booked your own tickets, your companion is not entitled to E+. You would have had to have booked your own tickets because you can't book two different classes of service on the same PNR. They need to be booked together for everyone to receive your benefits. As others have said, you can always call and United can do things you can't.

Not necessarily, it has long been a practice of comp'ing off-pnr into E+ if the elite is in E+ (see wiki for other benefits), in cases of the elite in premium cabin is more YMMV.

In the last three years I have done this multiple times. While I did have to call, the agents were quite ready to help and put my companions in E+.
Before Covid I had an agent indicate that she often did this for Platinum and 1K passengers but did not do this for Gold without referring to her supervisor.
It has not mattered what class I was in (F, PP or E). The only thing that mattered was that I was on that same flight.
