WhatsApp contact from QR Singapore. Scam or not ?

Had a rather unusual contact from someone pertaining to be from QR in Singapore. Not great English and addressing me as Mr P. They were trying to get me to change my biz flight to FCO in just 24 hours to Turkish airlines via IST telling me one of my flights had been downgraded to a smaller plane. For me it had scam written all over it so I used some rather colourful language before ending the conversation. However they insisted right until the end that they were from Qatar in Singapore. Will be connecting from Bangkok shortly and online the hardware is still showing as A350 900 Q suite for my flight . Never had this happen before with QR,felt a bit bizarre to be honest. Not sure how the scam would have played out if indeed it was a scam. Has anybody else experienced anything like this before with QR ?

Not had anything like that personally, but I would also be asking if it was a scam, how did they know you were due to fly on those flights? Did they know your PNR or ticket numbers? Have you been posting information on your travel arrangements on public places like the socials, or have left paperwork with that info in places where it could have been intercepted?

Sounds suspicious to me as none of these flights looks oversold:

FWIW, I'm based in Singapore, have flown QR the last few years to DOH (and then onward to other parts of the world), and they've never ever contacted me via WhatsApp. Given what you've shared, I'd say 90%+ chance it was a scam.

No nothing on paper at all and even if I did it wouldnt have revealed my contact phone number. A few months back I had someone contact me from a hotel I had booked in Switzerland with booking.com. They had somehow managed to take over the hotels booking system, they even managed to send me a message through the Booking.com system but when they started asking for my credit card details I instantly smelt a rat. Some of these scammers can be cunning in the extreme.

Anyway all looks good here in Singapore ,Im all checked in with window seats. Im guessing if Id been as stupid as they hoped I was going to be then at some point they would be requesting my card details. .

I would ask for the station manager when you get to SIN, see if they can verify/give an opinion.

FWIW I had a genuine call from the QR gate staff at SIN via WhatsApp recently, asking if I was on my way. (The number ended 2555.)

I would say yours is plausible, but worth checking up.

Ignore, block, delete. Do not waste time and energy on that. (flying 10 years QR and NEVER had a WA contact, ever! Always have the same mobile number in my contacts)

.
I had the same issue with booking years ago and this is the reason why I never used it again.

It was super creepy to receive messages apparently from the hotel I have booked, via the booking app, to know later that they were a scam.

When I google it, I found this scam to be massive. Booking takes no responsibility as the computers that they infiltrated where the ones in the hotels, not theirs.

While I cant speak to the authenticity of this particular instance, its quite common for official-ish business to be done through WhatsApp in that part of the world. Just last week I had someone from SATS WhatsApp me about my damaged bag report, from their personal phone.

I have also had someone from Menzies at Adelaide calling on WhatsApp to ask if I was going to show up for my QR flight.

i got a whatsapp message from QR in India during the summer last year when DOH was shut - just to let me know my flight was cancelled and not to travel to the airport, nothing else apart from that
