This is a very, very common issue and there are various fixes. One solution is to book the flights firm after which go back to into Manage My Booking and it will then let you reserve the seats for free.
Also, if I'm not mistaken another person reported that you can add the seats on for the fee at the time of booking but when you go to pay it will not charge for the seats, but I haven't tried this method myself. Either way, Golds and other relevant levels of status still have free seat bookings.

I have a booking in First and it is not letting me select row 1
. Not really a problem as I can select row 2, but being Gold I should be able to select row 1A or 1K in F shouldn’t I? I know that both are available from ExpertFlyer

On the same subject of "accidental" ancillary revenue, there's a similar issue in QR's booking process where it tries to sell lounge access to those who have booked a business class fare type which includes the lounge.

This has been going on for ages and there's clearly no intent to resolve. Does BA proactively refund those who pay, one wonders? (oops, I just saw a pig flying past my window seat).

Seat Selection as Gold
Maybe I am missing something, but I was under the impression that as a Gold one could select a seat upon booking for free. It now appears that there are three choices: book and select your seat 24 hours before departure at no additional cost, pay extra and select a seat, pay an outrageous full fare and select your seat. There is no longer a Gold benefit unless you pay more.

Its still a benefit. If you go all the way through the booking process it shouldnt charge you for seats. And worst case, after booking is made then you should be able to select for free.
Just one obvious question: you are logged in to your account or you have otherwise entered your FF number?

yes on the new site when you get to seat selection it shows a charge. just skip that, make your booking, and once done go in to mmb and select seats where it will be free.

I'm trying to select seats in MMB for a BAH flight I booked over the phone this morning and it's showing me prices. I'm Gold so it should be free. I've tried both the app and desktop site and it's the same on both. Outbound is AA and return BA, both sites are asking for payment.
I've not had the email confirmation yet but the app shows it's been ticketed.
Any idea what I should do?
