Stay here new year’s eve and a few subsequent nights here, given a corner room not xx07 as hotel was almost full and SNA got rejected, offered the option to check again for the last two nights but didn’t bother. Check in lady very nice and I didn’t feel any snobbish. Service was excellent cross board.

As expected breakfast was not great especially Asian food ( for example 4 days in a row fried rice varieties were egg, vegetable and chicken, no seafood/shrimp let lone crab meat) and fruit selections ( 4 or 5 cut fruits not premium quality like the ones at Figs cafe Hyatt Regency Hua Hin where I’m staying now), highlights of the breakfast: baby young coconut and French toast with mango and passion fruit sauce, IMO the breakfast is not worth to pay for if you are not Platinum or higher. You can ask young coconut despite not being on the elite cocktail menu.

Overall a good stay. IMO staying at Waldorf Bangkok as Diamond has much better value than staying at St. Regis as Titanium.

BTW, St. Regis BKK was second SPG hotel I stayed a few years ago and the second night this stay I became LTP.

Did a FHR booking today for next week, however it seems that the 100 USD Credits cannot be used at their 3 restaurants - lol.

Never again (24 Photos)

St. Regis Bangkok

We have a fond affinity of the StR BKK having stayed there several times per year in the last 13 years since it was built.

Pre Covid we were always upgraded to suites, especially on the Penthouse level, had wonderful Butlers and spent the last day of every Asian vacation by the pool, but this stay has me swearing off St Regis SIN and BKK after two awful stays.

Check In

Despite booking a Metro Suite via STARS, and there being multiple higher category suites available, we were not upgraded the day prior or the day of on the app.

I chatted to the hotel and within that 5 min exchange, they pulled all the highest suites from inventory. It was a pretty pathetic start to the stay and I expressed my displeasure.

We prebooked the S Class to and from BKK which is always a nice ride in BKK traffic with cold water, cold towels and wifi.

We were greeted by a Front Desk Agent and the Executive Housekeeping Manager (gentleman in a suit) and escorted to our room for private check in.

The common areas are still stunning and grand.

Room

The Housekeeping Manager mentioned our disappointment and lack of upgrade and he noted they had upgraded us to a Grand Metropolitan Suite.

I know the rooms are at the back of the hotel with limited view, but they are still a great 90sqm in size. Despite this, the rooms feel incredibly outdated and not modern. Like SIN, no work has be done since the hotel opened and everything from the switches to the furniture just feel old.

The room has zero privacy with residential apartment buildings looking into your room and the sheer blinds in the bathroom permanently down.

Curiously, they mentioned it being my first time at the hotel and I said we have over 20 stays. I have since learnt that Mariott destroyed their past guest history hence all of my previous excellent guest recognition was under SPG.

There was a welcome amenity including a bottle of red wine which I don't drink, but couldn't be bothered to ask for it to be swapped.

Instead of a STARS welcome letter, I receieved a FHR welcome letter. No big deal to me, however obviously they are supposed to work according my TA package.

They mentioned that they have Champagne Sabering at 6PM and half price Happy Hour cocktails 6-8PM. We planned to sit at the bar that night and have dinner.

Pool

The one great feature that remains consistent is the pool overlooking BKK.

It's private and you can spend a day lazing on a sunbed and feel like you're in a sanctuary in one of the busiest cities in the World.

The spa is now run by La Prarie and the treatments very lux.

Service

Service during the stay was fine, the Butler in the AM delivered our Barista coffees within a few minutes, however it was at checkout that we had issues.

We were running 30 mins for the airport. As you can't checkout in the app I went to front desk and asked for our folios.

The previous night's drinks were not discounted by 50%. When I mentioned this, the agent said "You must have ordered the wrong drinks?"

I was quite shocked with the tone rather than an attempt to resolve the issue. The agent then rang through to the bar, spoke some Thai, and came back to tell me "You didn't ask for the Happy Hour menu." We didn't order any extraordinary cocktails other than Mojitos and a Moscow Mules.

At this point, I was furious. We were personally invited to the Sabering and Happy Hour and how was I to know to ask for a specific menu. After a 10 min back and forth, and with the agent arguing, I said just charge my AMEX and I'll deal with it later.

Once we were halfway to the airport, my partner asked me if we receieved the $100USD credit and I checked the folio and it wasn't applied.

I emailed my TA who within a few minutes emailed the hotel team with all of these complaints.

Eventually we receieved an email from the GM with a lacklustre apology and notably missing the 'We look forward to welcoming you back and providing a better experience in future.'

Needless to say they have lost our business and we'll choose the FS or Capella in future.

Dining

The food is always good quality and breakfast has quite a large selection.

Overall

Overall, we used to love this hotel, but the management is truly terrible.

We will never return.

Never again

m0hamed I guess the GM doesn't care if long time guests come back or not. Sad to see this once great property devolve into a s***show.

They had none of my past stay history, play upgrade game inventory (with guests who book suites, not booking a base room and arguing for one), argued at checkout and didnt credit the F&B credit.

My partner also normally lets me handle all travel and he intervened when the front desk agent kept arguing to back me up. Im still shocked that she called the bar. Every other stay of my life wheres theres a dispute at check out is has handled by immediately rectifying. This stay truly takes the cake.

How many mistakes can you make on a night stay with a long time guest?

My partner is convinced that while I was on the phone to my TA in the hotel car to the airport that he deliberately slowed down once he overheard the conversation.

The reality is that its old and outdated among newer and more luxurious options.

This is basically the case for all Marriotts in Bangkok now, though, no? The sad fact is so many new elites have been minted in Thailand through promotions during COVID that the hotels dont really need to care too much right now. There are definitely hotels in Bangkok that still care about repeat guests, you just need to seek them out - Im lazing by the pool at one now.

P.S. I stayed in a Grand Metropolitan Suite as an upgrade from a Metro Suite on my last stay at the St. Regis in 2019. Was pretty underwhelmed by everything then - the dated suite, the lack of view, busy and mediocre breakfast, quality of cocktails at the bar. Not sure how much of this is really new since then!

To me, the big issue is they deleted all your stay history and this preferences and property specific loyalty was all gone. Marriott did that across the board to all my hotels so I was treated as if I was a first time visitor at far far too many hotels.

I recently went to Luxury Collection Athenee near STR - they too had deleted all my info and acted as if I was a first time visitor even though I've been a regular. The entire lounge staff and guest services was new. The GM ignored my email about issues that popped up.

Losing those preferences at LCs and STRs have been a big problem for me. I'm going back to BKK this week - I'll be at a Hyatt

Such a dumb decision.

I would love to love the PH but the lack of soundproofing from the highest floors is a major dealbreaker for me.

I had a similarly unpleasant experience last time I stayed at this property in 2019, involving a deliberate downgrade of an SNA that had confirmed into a CA Suite. The management here has been arrogant and anti-elite on upgrades for years.

This happened to me as well with IHG a few years ago (hotels not only lost my stay history but even my basic profile information like email address); coincidentally it coincided with the implementation of European GDPR and I always wondered if it was related.

Happy hour

Didn't they used to have a complimentary HH cocktail menu for plats along with the sabering?

Well, the St Regis is something - I find it hard to not color my perceptions of this property as a result of the abysmal views on offer in the suite they offer Ambassador guests. I frankly felt seasonally depressed in this room - it's rather dim. Regardless, other properties in BKK, namely, the two LC properties, provide a far better experience for less baht. Here are my pros, cons, and photos:

Pros:
  • Upgraded to a Grand Metropolitan Suite (also a con) - which is a full suite with a terrible view
  • Bed was comfortable - just right moving towards plush mattress, plush pillows, decently thick covers
  • Shower pressure was good - though a bit scattered and messy - from the wand head
  • Furniture was generally comfortable
  • Left a welcome gift of two chocolates and a macaron
  • Staff was generally friendly
  • Asked for 3 PM checkout and was given 4 PM
  • Elite happy hour is from 5 PM to 10 PM and comes with a choice of a few drinks on a special menu and an included canape - the Platinum drink was decent, though not my favorite flavor
  • Breakfast (welcome gift choice) was pretty good
    • Really enjoyed the roti - so good!
    • Nice made to order Benedicts
    • Pancakes made to order were good
    • Tasty latte
Cons:
  • Absolutely terrible view - probably the worst I've had
  • Windows were dirty on the exterior, too
  • While I wasn't actively upsold, I was given a sheet passively with upsell prices in cash and points (just tacky)
  • No apparent turndown service attempt - odd for this market
  • Not a fan of the single-use toiletries - seemed very small and like I was having to ration - I much prefer the larger multi-use bottles
  • No Internet steaming options on the TVs
Overall, I don't see why I would return when the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit and Athenee are so much better.
