MonAsty, Autograph Collection, Thessaloniki, Greece [Master Thread]

The Monasty delivered a superb experience during a recent stay of almost two weeks. I’ll note in particular the service by Fillis, Eva, and the entire front service team. There were other points that stand out however.

-The level of individual service was excellent. Beyond consistently being greeted by name, the entire staff was clearly making an effort to synchronise their awareness of guests. Though the service was never intrusive, it was always proactive.

-Food service within the hotel itself was very good. Breakfast in particular was excellent.

-The Autograph Collection was already our favourite brand, but this was as good of a Marriott property as I’ve experienced. The Monasty was on par with or even exceeded my experiences with both the St Regis and Luxury Collection brands. Recognition of Marriott status was superb. This property warrants consideration and possibly a special trip for other Marriott guests in Greece or the Aegean/Balkans region.

-Marriott status or not, Thessaloniki is probably under appreciated as a destination, at least to North American travellers. Taxis are easy, the sea is beautiful, and the food is wonderful. Mount Olympus is within sight of the shore on a clear day. English was widely spoken. The hotel was an easy five minute walk to the sea. There was a very good grocery across the street from the main entrance. Several tourist destinations such as the White Tower and the Agia Sophia were within an easy 10-20 minute walk. Outside of the hotel, there was excellent dining nearby. A 5-15 minute walk will offer a wide range of options ranging from fine dining to gyros.

I strongly recommend this hotel. It truly does justify a trip in its own right.

So excited to hear about this hotel! Thanks for the review. And I second your opinion - Thessaloniki is fantastic. Amazing food and far less expensive than Athens. It's a great base to explore northern Greece.

Thanks for the report

I’m staying at this property in October for 3 nights on points. Applied SNAs. Have been to Thessaloniki previously. Talk about great food! Some of the old town tavernas and bakeries with bougatsa are unreal. Plan on going on a full day wine tour this time while here. Looking forward to staying at this hotel.

Thanks for the review, now I can't wait to try it out in March, where I will be staying for 2 nights. Will report back with a review (if nobody else beats me to it )

Cheers!

Also looking at this property and appreciating the review, thanks. What is the best way to get to/from the airport?

Taxi. The hotel can organise one if necessary but i wouldn’t expect any difficulty from just going to the taxi rank. Uber exists, but seems to be just a dispatch for the existing taxi infrastructure. We tried Uber a couple of times and wound up cancelling both times after lengthy delays.

Thumbs up Monasty Hotel Review

I was at the hotel for a two-night weekend at the beginning of March. The hotel is new and the hard product is at a fairly high level. As can be seen from the photos, there is a reminiscence of the Byzantine past of the city. The service was at a good level, and the staff were quite friendly. I'm titanium but there was no upgrade.

Rooms are relatively small, but they are normal for a hotel in the center of a large European city, the most valuable thing is that most have large balconies. The bathrooms are also relatively small, with very interesting handles to control the water. Most interesting, however, is the long and narrow elevator.

The hotel has a restaurant and a bar, we visited both the food is great, I would especially recommend the burgers at the Samite bar, as well as the steaks at the Botargo restaurant. They make very good cocktails in the bar, I recommend it, and on Saturday there was also a DJ with music from the 80s and 90s. The bar was full and overall the place seems very lively.

The breakfast was very rich and served in the Samite bar, with the option of free ordering of omelets, eggs benedict, pancakes and more from a separate menu. Otherwise, breakfast is a buffet.

The hotel is located in the very center of the city, 5 minutes from the sea and within walking distance of all the main sights.

The main problem is parking. The hotel does not have a parking lot (but we had a car). As I live in Sofia, I know how difficult parking is in the cities of Southeast Europe. Before we left, I wrote to them, they said that they had secured a parking lot 20 meters from the hotel. When we arrived, it turned out that the parking lot was occupied and there were no spaces, the street is narrow, you can't wait on it, the car had to drive around for 20 minutes until a space became available. The people from the parking lot were totally uninterested in the fact that we had a reservation through the hotel. So keep one thing in mind if you are driving.

Overall the hotel was very good and if I have work in Thessaloniki I would visit it again.

Very well designed hotel, friendly staff and perfect location

MonAsty, Thessaloniki, Autograph Collection

1 Review | 100% Recommended

Very well designed hotel, friendly staff and perfect location (24 Photos)

MonAsty, Thessaloniki, Autograph Collection

This is the only Marriott family property in this 2nd biggest city of Greece.  The property is relatively new and was glad that this was made part of the Autograph Collection which is one of my favorite brand within the Marriott system.  For me it was a very well themed hotel - themed on all the famous monastry found in Greece.  Although not really a former monastry, they have done a very good job with the themed (the most authentic religious themed property I've been too is the Nassau Breda which is in a former church/cathedral building).  I stayed at this property for 2 nights.

Location

The property is very centrally located, with the famous Aristotelous Square just around the corner.  Basically from here reaching any places in the city centre was possible on foot - including the promenade and the newly developed port area.  Outside of that, there are lots of different restaurants/cafe in the area for different level of dining.  There is also a supermarket just opposite the hotel.

It takes about 15-20 mins drive from the airport.  Parking can be a nightmare - there is a parking garage just opposite the hotel which is open 24 hours.  The night parking charges were reasonable (from 21-07h for 6€), with the day parking charges ok.  If you are lucky there are quite a number of street parking available around the property or within a 10 min walk from the property.

For me the location of the hotel beats the other chain hotels in the city (Hyatt and Holiday Inn).

Check In

I arrived rather late to the property, close to 18h.  The first impression of the property was quite impressive with a nice open cafe/green area.  The lobby area itself was on the small side - but very well appointed and immediately reflects the hotel's theme.

IMG_20230311_181756791.jpg

I was warmly welcomed by the front desk team (of 2 associates).  The usual request for ID was done and in addition to that, guests are required to indicate any allergy (which does make sense).  The whole check-in process was done in a very friendly casual yet professional manner.  I had already noticed in the app that my entry level room was upgraded to a Deluxe room.  I did ask during check in on possibility of a further upgrade to a Jr Suite - which they had to consult with the back office.  I was informed to first have a look at my current appointed room before deciding if I would still like to get the suite.

IMG_20230311_181906901.jpg

[There seemed to be welcome drinks (?) available - juice, water or sparkling wine - although strangely I was not asked if I wanted one.  Therefore I was not sure if it's for all guests or just certain guests].  The setup seemed to be on display the whole day.

1_IMG_20230311_181744709.jpg

Room

I was shown to my room accommpanied by the front desk to view the first room, a deluxe category.  After having a look at the room, it was ok in size and since they had already left in my room the welcome gift I just decided to keep the room and not bothered to view the Junior Suite - since it was just for 2 nights and I will not be in the room too frequently.  [Although in my opinion, management should just not make the situation so akward].  The associate did ask a few times if I was really satisfied with the room - which was a nice touch.

IMG_20230311_185223079.jpg

IMG_20230311_185313699.jpg

The view to room - this left also much to be desired - they categorize this as an Urban View room, but I am not sure what this meant - as my view was towards the windows of the next building - so not much of a view.  On this note, it was also quite dissapointing if they had not wanted to upgrade elite guests to their Jr Suite, they could at least give elite guests if available rooms with the balcony.

IMG_20230312_110128058_HDR.jpg

For the room itself, I felt that it was very well designed and appointed.  Next to the entryway to the room was the wardrobe (which had the usual bathrobe, shoe box, safe, etc)  and the minibar next to it.  There was coffee/tea making amenities - with the Nespresso machine - although it was a mix of generic and original capsules.  Since I am not a coffee connoisseur, I am did not taste too much difference in quality.  There was also a bottle of water provided complimentary (but did not seem to be a daily replenished item).  Outside of that, the minibar was filled and chargable.

IMG_20230311_183557706.jpgIMG_20230311_184348167.jpg

On the left side of the entrance was the bathroom.  On the other end of the wall to ceiling windows, was a nice lounge area.  On one side of the wall was a long desk which was a combined generic desk and working area (what I would say more of a semi working desk since it was not that big and not realy that convenient with the TV above your head).

IMG_20230311_183301481.jpg

Sleep quality was good - with no external/internal noise disturbance - only small disturbance was when there were gusts of strong wind - you will be able to hear it whistling though the windows.  The bed was ok - a bit on the firm side (with a very thin mattras protector), what I did not like was the pillow quality, I felt it was too soft and provided no support.  My workaround here was to fold the pillow in two, which did help.

IMG_20230311_183258612.jpg

Climate control in the room was good - except again for those who need a cooler room, I found (like at a lot of properties in Greece) you can't really lower it too much - in this case, I was not able to lower it to less than 20 deg.  If I remembered, it was disabled and there was a sign indicating it was some central setting.  Luckily during my stay, the temperature outside was not too warm, so it was still ok.

Internet connection was good - except that it's only 24 hours valid and you had to relogin after that.  The TV size was big with a mix of local and international options.  One nice thing is that you are able to stream your device from your phone/tablet/laptop.  Talking about internet/wifi - strangely one site that was blocked was this flyertalk site - it did not seem to be the hotel specific issue, but also tried it at another location and it was blocked.  I believe it is more of a provider issue as it worked when I was at the Aegean lounge.

The bathroom size was ok - with only a walk -in shower.  Toiletries were all wall mounted and seemed to be from a local brand.  I liked them - with a very calming smell.  Water pressure and temperature control was good - after you gotten the hint of adjusting the temperature.  The only small complain here is the small glass shielding - it was just too small to prevent water from spraying outside of the shower area.

IMG_20230311_183546638.jpg

IMG_20230311_183550332.jpg

One very nice touch was a very generous welcome gift of local produce - including a bottle of their house wine - which was very drinkable.  This small gesture was a very welcomed action and certainly left a very good impression of the property.

IMG_20230311_183305712.jpg

There was also turndown service - which in my case only happened on the 2nd night - I guess for the 1st night due to my late checkin.

IMG_20230312_201641839.jpg

Overall

The hotel does seem to have the possibility of hosting meetings/small conferences at their 1 and only meeting room - which is also the same floor as the gym.  The gym room was spacious and had quite a good selection for weight and cardio training.  The hotel does have a rooftop area (which is also the pool area) - but sadly during this period it was closed for renovation.

IMG_20230312_204247591.jpg

IMG_20230312_204250783.jpgIMG_20230312_204253851.jpg

All in all, I would say that among the all the other properties I have stayed previously in the city, this will be my go to choice.  Despite the akward situation of the room upgrade, I found the staff especially the front desk staff to be very pleasant and very personal - greeting you by name.  The property size makes it possibly to have such intimate relation with their guests.  Housekeeping staff were also very detailed in their tasks (you know when you find your cloths folded up when you return).

Great review and thanks for the pictures!
I can't quite tell from the breakfast buffet pictures but do you recall if they had bougatsa on the buffet along with spanakopita and tiropita? Thessaloniki is know for the best bougatsa in the world and some of the best traditional pies

I believe I did see Tiropita and Bougasta - but not the Spanakopita.

However if you have access to the Aegean lounge at the airport - I can confirm that it's there since I had it

Cheers!

Easily the finest hotel in northern Greece

Mrs Buckeye and I stayed here 12 days ago. Mrs Buckeye has family from the area. Great to meet them for the first time.

Hotel is as central in the city as you can get. You can walk to the water, white tower, university, tavernas, ouzeris, bougatsa shops

What really separated this hotel was the staff. You can tell this hotel is lead, not managed, well. People seem to enjoy each other’s company and it translates into how guests are treated. We felt like family.

SNAs for 3 night stay cleared 2 days prior to check in. Received executive suite which was quite nice.

Chose breakfast over points. Seriously, only a fool would choose points at these hotels in Europe. The breakfast was outstanding, buffet style, but they will make you anything if you ask. Had strapasada each morning, it’s worth it

Rooftop bar was very nice but a bit loud for the mid to upper 50’s crowd that we are. Also very nice bar on first floor

Bravo to the team here. Just a great family feel.

As the most recent stay report dates back to 2023, I would like to contribute and add a review based on my September 2025 stay.

What a great hotel this is indeed!

I was planning to book a 3 night stay and for some reason the Marriott website did not provide any availability for my selected dates, this although surrounding dates were available. Hence I contacted the hotel directly (reservations @ monastyhotel.com) and they provided me with the option to book the dates through them, Great service! This also gave me the opportunity to ask additional questions, which were all met with a swift and satisfying answer.

On the night of arrival, I was welcomed by the staff of the hotel and they made me feel right at home. I was offered water or a sparkling wine as we went through the check in formalities. As breakfast was already included in my rate, I was offered either the 1000 points or a 10% discount on alcoholic beverages. On top of that the receptionist proactively explained that due to the lack of a Club Lounge offering, they would add 750 points for each night of my stay (which were indeed posted after check out).

As I originally booked a Classic room I was told that I received an upgrade to the Deluxe room (the exact same one as in post #10), Beforehand I also tried to use my SNA's but it was explained to me that these would not be honored due to the fact that the hotel was completely booked because of the International Trade Fair taking place at that time. Which is makes sense concerning the circumstances.

After going through all these formalities, the receptionist offered me a tour of the hotel and the room and explained all the amenities in detail. All in all an experience one would expect at the St.Regis, thus a huge shout out to them! In the room I also found a small welcome amenity which included local sweets and a local vegetable crisps, which is a nice touch.

During my stay I did enjoy both the breakfast and the rooftop pool.

The Breakfast starts at 7am and is served on the ground floor at the Samite Gastro Bar Area of the hotel. You can take a seat both inside or outside. The Breakfast normally costs you €25,- and includes a buffet with a hot and cold selection of food. These foods had either an International or Local focus. Next to the buffet option one can also order items from a small a la carte style menu, which is included in the Breakfast. This menu includes your Omelets, Pancakes or Eggs Benedict to name a few. Drinks wise, your coffee order taken at your table after which it is made by the Barista. Concerning juices, these are fresh as well.

The Swimming pool is located on the top floor, next to the Ennea Rooftop Pool Bar, here you can find a few sun loungers and umbrella’s. The pool area was open until 6pm and was never crowded during my stay, this although the hotel was fully booked. One can also easily order food or drinks near the pool as the staff of the bar takes orders and walks around frequently.

All in all I must say that this stay was more than perfect and I would certainly return when in Thessaloniki. A huge thank you to the Entire team of the hotel in making me feel welcome and for going the extra mile!
