Ah, from what I've seen, most SE Asian pax aren't utilizing mobile check in/OLCI or using a mobile BP and prefer to check in either at the Airport or in-town checkin receiving a physical boarding pass. So, I'd imagine most have already had their "document check" whether they realized it or not.

Just to confirm its 100% about doing online/mobile check-in without dropping bags. I don't think I've been to a destination that hasn't needed it and I go through HKG airport on Cathay a few times a month, but perhaps they exist. If you don't want it options are:
1. Swing by the Cathay check-in desks on your way through the airport (F very rarely has a queue if you're emerald)
2. Lounge
3. Just do it at the gate, it only takes a minute
4. Check a bag, then they will do it anyway :P

No but the visa situation here is a bit more complex
In other situations where you have mainly HBO (intra-Schengen, CTA (UK/IE)-Schengen, US/CA/AU domestic), docs aren't that likely to be wrong cos you're already inside the immigration zone or (CTA-Schengen) not likely to fail it.

HK to anywhere is not as straightforward

I've lost faith in the mobile BP, and will now stick 100% to printed ones.... simply because I've seen many cases where travelers flash a mobile BP at the gate, only to be told by the agent that a paper BP is needed, and to step aside. Precious minutes are then wasted, while the agent rushes off to print the BP.

There doesn't seem to be any consistency in where/how this happens - I've seen it 4-5x in HKG, SFO, and other regional airports, on both regional and long-haul, and on both CX and KA metal.

Anyone have ideas as to why mobile BPs are being rejected at the gate, in favor of paper ones?

1) Cos Asian GAs have a thing with paper
2) I do see that in a JAL domestic boarding, paper BPs are far less likely to mess up

Online BP for me is just to assign seat (if not previously assigned), and to avoid being bumped (since CX bumps on a LIFO basis)

i normally have something to check in so I see an agent anyway.

I use a mobile BP every time, and never have checked bags. On many trips with CX/KA, long and short haul, I've only had a mobile BP rejected once, and that was in Singapore - the dragon guarding the security area made me go and print it before she would let me through. Not sure if that was an official policy or just her, but on previous and subsequent trips through Singapore they had no problem with my mobile BP.

Never had a problem with mobile BP at the gate anywhere, apart from the aforementioned re-entering of passport details every time, which I've now solved thanks to this thread - I just do it when I arrive at the lounge instead and boarding is much smoother now!

Oh yeah. There was these. Even tho we had obtained mobile BP we had two incidents where GAs don't want to let us use it:

1) https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cath...ained-cts.html

2) Also I received a royal bollocking at CX LHR a few years ago for this:

I got a royal telling off by CX J LHR check in when [missus] used her mobile BP to enter T3 and start eating/Chanel shopping, skipping check-in docs check

I whatsapp called [the missus] and stopped her from leaving the lounge...then had the GA verify lounge dragon has seen [missus]'s docs

I was checking in her suitcase. Technically I could be dinged for that. I had to sit there and eat her lording
