Question about Instant Upgrade Fare

I have a flight, #1925 EWR-SAT on Frida June 24. It is booked in Y and under my reservation it says "Premier Instant Upgrade Fare
Confirm upgrade now". When I click upgrade now I get an error message of: ! We're sorry. All segments are no longer available for upgrades. When I search for a new flight it shows 3 tickets available for first class. I called but the rep said for some reason she cant and to keep trying. What fare bucket do these upgrades fall into? Just so I know what to look for what opens up. I have never gotten one of these fares before.... Thanks

There have been some recent changes in used fare classes for Instant Upgrades. Had been PN was needed for everyone and the system still seems to use PN for triggering the message. But seems Gold and Silvers need RN and this error has been occurring for some when PN exists but RN does not.

What does Expert Mode say?

From what i've seen for YBM upgrades (from coworkers and friends):
PN = GS and 1K
RN = Plat - Silver

Agreed - and I think this evidence seals it.

Prior to February of this year, all YBM-ups cleared to PN, and because of this the web interface will still prompt you that one is available as long as there is PN space. But all elites below 1K clear to R(N), so in this case where there is PN but not RN space you cannot clear the instant upgrade. You can call back in R/RN opens up.

Speaking selfishly, I think Plat should have been grouped with 1K on this change. RN is pretty hard to find compared to PN. Largely kills the benefit for Plats.

Can somebody help how the waitlist would work in my very peculiar situation.

Looking to fly LAX-EWR-SDQ. Because most fares filed LAX-SDQ exclude travel on LAX-EWR, I can't get any cheap P fares (lowest J is D) and cheapest economy is B outbound and M return. the EWR-SDQ-EWR segments are auto upgrading with a dummy booking. If I then apply a RPUs (I have plenty) for the LAX-EWR legs, will I be ahead of everybody (including GS) since I'm on a B/M? Or no, since that's not a CPU eligible flight? Would it then be all waitlisted GS, then 1Ks by fare?

All my options are pretty crappy at this point, so trying to figure out what my best, bad option is.

You will rank normally as a 1K with a B fare and RPU applied on LAX-EWR (between 1Ks on Y and M fares and below all GS).

And yeah, that's kind of cheesy faring. You can route lower business fares by adding a stop, and can route p.s. with discount economy (must be an inventory issue if it's pricing B/M). But not a nice problem to have..

Thanks. The married segments are preventing any economy lower than M, which is having a knock-on effect on the discount P fares (since most are UPs, the 'discount' business is a BUP even with two stops) - still ~$900 one-way for a 2 stop itinerary. Insane.

Sort of same problem but with different wording. Mine says:

! We could not process your request. Please see the message below and make revisions.

! Please select at least one segment to be upgraded.

Of course I have selected the segment to be upgraded.

1k on a B fare and I get that response when I try to confirm my upgrade. Expert mode says PN4.

I get that phrase on the web. The app offers it to me as well but I just get in an endless loop there where I click to confirm and it kicks me back to the home page with no option to change my seat to first. Guessing this is typical UA IT wonkiness but.......

This recently happened to me. 1k on a b fare. I sent the info and conf# to 1kvoice email, and they upgraded me and apologized for the error messages. Took less than 12 hours from email to resolution. HTH!

Call.

I've never been able to self-serve clear into PN anytime other than booking. The good news is I've always just been able to call say "Hey, I booked a Y/B fare, it looks like PN is available but the website isn't letting me upgrade, could you please help?" And with one exception the agents have immediately fixed it. (The one exception was a "Uh... I don't think we do that anymore, let me check with someone..." 2 minutes on hold and then cheerfully taken care of)

This happens to me when I have a mixed fare itinerary (meaning some segments are not in M, B, or Y) or when I have a United Express segment on the reservation, regardless of fare basis. I have always been able to have the segments upgraded by calling, and it generally only takes a minute or so for the agent to take care of it.
