Starting June 22, 2013 in the US & Canada, Gold, Platinum & Platinum Premier elites will receive continental breakfast daily in the executive lounge.
For each day (not stay) the lounge is closed, these members will have the option of breakfast for 2 in the Restaurant or 750 points (1,000 points in select locations). The same applies if there is no lounge at a JW Marriott, Autograph Collection, Renaissance or Marriott Hotel.
In Europe, hotels without a lounge offer a choice of breakfast for two in the restaurant or 750 points daily (change as of July 2014)
These Elites will be given a card at check-in to pick continental breakfast or the points.
In addition, changes to the Platinum arrival gift:
The new standard Platinum arrival gift will be the choice between 500 points or a $10 food and beverage coupon to be used during your stay. A hotel can offer additional amenities, but they must offer points or the $10 F&B credit at the minimum.
The Platinum arrival gift change is for US/Canada only. Int'l properties will continue to offer 500 points or food/drink amenity.

I was actually excited about this new policy, until I actually stayed at a Marriott on the weekend and saw what the 'continental' breakfast looked like. It was worse than the executive lounge breakfast. Even worse, the same hotel (Albuquerque Marriott Pyramid North) previously provided a full breakfast.

Shrug. Some FS properties had the exec lounge closed & didn't provide any brekkie certs. At least they have to do cont'l now. Some are going beyond that & providing full brekkie in restaurant; some are doing the minimal. My prediction had been that those who didn't do anything before would probably do the minimum now & those that were offered more would continue to offer more. Some are straddling it w/ offering cont'l but providing small upcharge.
To me the $10FB coupon was a definite revenue grab by Marriott.
Cheers.

Should be points vs bfast always be an option at a FS Marriott in the US? At check in at the Wichita I was told they didn't do the 750 pts just free breakfast. Should I ask at the front desk again?

If the hotel balks at the points, tell them to check this link:
http://www.marriott.com/rewards/memb...s/guarantee.mi
It's shown right there that it's 750 points or breakfast.
Cheers.

MR tweaked the brekkie program for Europe
A FTer tipped me off to this tweak in the elite bennies:
"In Europe, hotels without a lounge offer a choice of breakfast for two in the restaurant or 750 points daily"
Will update the wiki & the exec lounge sticky.
Cheers.

Hopefully this will not lead to select properties in Europe electing to provide 1000 points daily in lieu of a breakfast option!

I find it hard to believe all European hotels are following a unified policy on this.

We never got that option when checking into Glasgow in April unless the policy has changed recently. I don't think any amount of points would tempt my OH into taking the points in preference to breakfast!

My guess is this is a recent change (the Europe part), so we'll see how it plays out. It's specific to hotels with no lounge.

The website says the lounge is closed on the weekend, so you have the option of 750 points or free breakfast. The Wichita Marriott is not on the list of properties that offer points only (and those that are offer 1,000 points, not 750). The last report on the exec lounge sticky is that a full breakfast is offered in the restaurant, so that might be worth giving up 750 points if you're a breakfast person.
If the hotel balks at the points, tell them to check this link:

It's shown right there that it's 750 points or breakfast.

Of course, two days later when the points posted they weren't there.
Other than that, the hotel was great. The whole lobby was remodeled and the lounge was key accessible over the weekend for drinks from the fridge.
