Amazing, isn't it?

I'm sure I will really be all over this issue when I hit 1K (and the 6 GPUs) in December.

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to let you know that well be re-launching Expert Mode as an opt-in feature later this afternoon. This feature will display all fare classes when shopping for flights on united.com. You can opt-in to this feature by logging into your MileagePlus account and following these steps:
  1. Go to united.com > My Account
  2. Select Manage Profile
  3. In the Preferences section, select View All Flight Search Preferences
  4. In the Expert Mode section, read and acknowledge the customer advisements
  5. Click Save at the bottom of the page
As always, thanks for your feedback and patience over the last couple weeks while we worked to make these changes.

Great. Now I can see all the flights with R availability for 1/1/13 that I will not be booking since UA will not extend 2 GPU, expiring on 12/31 by one day.

Sweet! I hadn't visited here in a few days and was just wondering about an update on these features and saw the Insider posts here. Nice!

Thank you for the update. Can't wait for Expert mode to come back, as of right now it's not there yet. BTW, old UA had the Expert mode all along, it's another example what is wrong with "baby was thrown out with bathwater" approach by new UACO management. It has been very frustrating year for me personally.

The former.

It's a factual systems design/limitation. Open R space isn't processed in real-time.

Like you said, those are the rules, and those who know the rules, get the rewards.
In the case described here the R inventory being visible with a customer on the waitlist is NOT how the systems are designed to operate normally. Where it gets a bit more interesting is that the situation dmbfan222 described involves the ticket being purchased over the weekend. Looking back historically it seems these issues happen more often on the weekends. That is also when they are making massive changes to the schedules and moving things around. It would not surprise me at all if they disable certain systems while making those changes, the same way they don't force the seat assignment "fix" during that window, because they expect things to get back to normal at the end of the weekend.

They should either not open R inventory during these windows or process it correctly but that doesn't appear to be how it works these days.

For people who prefer fewer clicks it seems that you should be able to just use this link once it goes live: https://www.united.com/web/en-US/app...reference.aspx.

Just enabled ^ but no fare buckets visible within existing itins from what I can see.

Of course the disclaimer includes the caveat that phone agents will not manually clear upgrades.

I see it working for me now. You have to click on the "fare class" blue text and a pop up window opens up with all the fare buckets.

Still playing around with it, but so far looks promising....

Here is the real reason...

Upgrade processing. The thing is broken and hiding the availability was their first choice.

Here is the fine print -

Not all upgrades are cleared in real time. Our process of clearing upgrades varies based on the type of upgrade and when the upgrade inventory becomes available. Upgrades that are not able to be cleared in advance will be managed at the departure gate, subject to availability and in priority order.

Complimentary Premier Upgrades (CPUs): As a Premier member awaiting a CPU, you may see upgrade availability and still not be cleared. This is because the process for clearing CPUs runs at 24-hour intervals before the departure date based on the eligibility window for your Premier status. Inside of 24 hours, the process will run more frequently. When these processes run, they take into consideration all customers awaiting an upgrade at that time and clear them in priority order.

All other MileagePlus upgrades: For all other MileagePlus upgrades, waitlists are cleared in real time except during the 24-hour period before trip departure. Inside this 24-hour window, upgrades requested for flights in CPU-eligible regions will be cleared using the same automated system that processes CPUs. For all other flights, upgrade clearance inside of 24 hours will be managed at the departure gate in priority order.

Our phone agents will not clear pending upgrades. Our representatives do not have complete visibility into the upgrade priority order for a given flight. Because we would not want to potentially clear customers in the wrong order, upgrades are only processed by our automated system, or at the gate prior to departure. You can view the status of your pending upgrade through Manage Reservations on united.com
