Upgrades from Y to Y+, Y+ to J, Y to J ....

I'm not sure if anyone else has posted about this. But if you check the newly updated Asia Miles Award Charts, you'll realize that upgrades from Y to J are the same as Y+ to J ... this makes no sense ...

Take HKG-LHR on BA for example ... upgrades from Y to J requires 70,000 miles ... while upgrades from Y to Y+ and Y+ to J requires 30,000 miles.....

Hope this is a mistake ....

this depends on how CX treats Y+. makes complete sense if they treat this as just the same as the Y cabin. If they follow BA's route you wouldn't even be able to upgrade from Y to J

If I remember the discussions correctly, on CX you need to have a K class (or higher) economy fare to be able to upgrade to business. I suspect the differences between K/H/B and the discounted Y+ class fares will not be all that dramatic.

Yes if I had my choice, K class SE Asia regional fares would credit to AA as a discounted economy class or ALL CX flights exHKG to Asia/SWPacific would have AA code-share flight numbers.

But no one listens, especially if you are wandering

Here's an interesting tidbit of information from the CX website that everyone seems to have missed (emphasis mine):

As Premium Economy Class is a brand-new Cathay Pacific product, other award redemptions will be made available in phases. One-way or round-trip awards on Premium Economy Class will be available from June 2012, with upgrade awards from Economy Class to Premium Economy Class to be introduced in the 4th Quarter of 2012. By this time, a one-class upgrade policy will apply as usual, meaning Economy Class ticket holders will be able to redeem an upgrade to Premium Economy Class, and Premium Economy Class ticket holders an upgrade to Business Class. Upgrades from Economy to Business Class will still be available on flights without Premium Economy Class cabins. For award details, please refer to Awards Charts.

Indeed... Just hope that they expand it back to Y --> V (instead of Y --> K) to upgrade to PY or else that will means another round of devaluation ..... and make me just do straight J redemption instead of upgrade

K class is essentially the same price as Y+, so why would one even bother wasting miles to upgrade if they can just purchase a Y+ ticket? I'm hoping for a V class upgrade to Y+ as well, and for a lot less than 45,000 miles one way.

The link is private. If you login to MPC, you can see it in the latest news section where it has some intro link to Premium Economy.

just made a fake booking on CX website to check the pricing on LAX->HKG in Oct

K class Y ticket -> ~US$1200
R class Y+ ticket -> ~US$1900

unless they're going to have deeper discount Y+ ticket, for CX

Straight's relatively attractive now. In any case given a choice between full redemption and upgrade (same availability), I'd go for straight redemption and burn more miles.

But that does mean we lose flexibility when we're running low on miles...miles are slightly devalued as a result.

Me too. Even at current rates, longhaul K is far more expensive than V and if paying out of pocket, I would not shell out the fare diff between V and K as well as miles. In that case I would just redeem J.

My travelling pattern is to ensure that I get my 60K Club miles annually flying on Y and then any personal travel after that, I would redeem F tickets where possible, otherwise J.

If you think LAX is bad, I just priced out HKG-JFK return:

HKG-JFK return in V class ~ HK$12K incl. tax
HKG-JFK return in R class ~ HK$27.5K incl. tax

Come on.... what kind of pricing is this??

Look like ex TPE trips are still neccesary for JFK.

I think I Class TPE-HKG-JFK is around 34K incl tax.
