Yes, this is 5-15 years down the line. I think that is without a doubt.
That being said, I think a new C/D terminal built in the style of B would be amazing. Honestly, it would not even require the consolidation of Star carriers in a single terminal, since once the new C/D is built, the train becomes an actual useful method of conveyance. (No more long walk to the train station, plus an actual station under D).

I have to say, I am embarassed by C/D every time I enter the US there, especially if I have just come from... MUC or even JNB. Welcome to America, please watch your food at all times lest it be eaten by sparrows or mice!

The F Gates in ORD are deplorable. I always dread when I have to make a transfer there because the whole area is a dump.
If UA spends money on any gates the IAD Lower A Gates are easily the pit of any of the hub gates, much worse than even the F ones in ORD. I put on my noise canceling headphones, a Five Brothers single bacon cheeseburger and try to avoid eye contact. It's dark, it's loud. Maybe more lights, and an RCC... one can dream.
Whatever, close IAD send everything to CLE.

While I have no love for the C/D terminal, primarily due to the long walks and shuttling (train or bus) involved, it still serves my basic needs of a terminal - a place I walk through to get to the plane. I'll survive if it's not an architectural monument, art museum, or gourmet restaurant.
If a new terminal dropped out of the sky, I'd rejoice. But if it's United's funding choice between a new IAD and say, more/better planes with more routes, times, and upgrade chances, is anyone voting for a better IAD?

no way all * flight AND UA flights can operate out of one terminal.
and the train, the LH lounge, and the fact that B is a great terminal makes up for what C/D lacks.
IAD used to be my home airport, but i agree with some posters here. it fits my need, and i've given up hope for a new terminal a while ago.
besides, anything that IAD has now is way better then the dreadful G concourse. hopefully nobody has forgotten that place.

I had the misfortune to connect through IAD last week, an airport I go to great lengths to avoid.
The train is just plain stupid. Heading between the lower A gate hell and the C/D area, it is 15 minutes walking for a 2 minute train ride.
In regard to the lower A gate / UX nightmare, it is crazy to have the worst airport environment serving the most delay prone segment of the "United family" and have no RCC anywhere around it. So much for the peaceful respite from the chaos.
Since UX can't seem to accurately assess a delay issue (2 hour delay announced in 10-20 minute segments at a time), there is no opportunity to get to a club, get connected to answer emails, etc. I made the mistake of trying to return a rather important phone call and was continually drowned out by the on-going PA duel between the gate agents announcing 15 departures over and over and over....

New UA is sitting on $9.1B in cash, I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility that some of it gets earmarked for a new C/D terminal at IAD. One can only hope...

how about taking over Terminal D and E at BWI and dumping IAD all together
It's actually EASIER to get from BWI to downtown DC than it is from IAD.

the expensive air hole terminal
is the actually planned location of the new C/D gates. The long walk is only "temporary" like everything else at Dulles. This is what you get from an authority that is accountable to no one and seems engineer heavy. They have a gravy train at Dulles and DCA but the passenger is last served. The taxi and parking monopolies are a scandal. They also have no real plan for integrating Metro into the airport. They own the right of way but the priority is Tysons not the airport. The silver line will start a few blocks from my place.

But there are a lot of government agencies in the Chantilly area that fly a lot of people a lot of places. I try to avoid BWI just for this reason, since most of my DC visits are Tyson's Corner and west.

I hope to see newUA to clean IAD up immediately wih some new passenger amenities and RCC improvements, announce company intention to explore costs of building new C/D and then decide whether new terminal and IAD hub is worth it.
